Long TD lifts Shippensburg past Bermudian Springs

The Shippensburg football team is 3-0 thanks to a big play Friday night.

Down 24-21 late in the fourth quarter, quarterback Carter Van Scyoc hooked up with senior wide receiver Cody Gustafson for a 70-yard touchdown pass that put the Greyhounds up for good with 4:12 left, giving them the 28-24 victory over Bermudian Springs at Veterans Memorial Park.

It admittedly wasn't the best game of the year for the Greyhounds, but nevertheless they walked away with a win and will start the process of preparing for Waynesboro next week.

"We played sloppy, undisciplined football tonight, and if we play like that next week, we will lose. This was our worst game of the year," Ship coach Eric Foust said.

Despite a couple of dropped passes, Foust seemed to be more concerned about the defensive side of the ball.

"I'm not worried about the dropped passes as much as our linebackers not getting into coverage and doing what they are supposed to do," Foust said.

Leading 14-7 at halftime, the Hounds came out a little flat in the second half and Bermudian Springs was ready to capitalize. The Eagles scored first on a 27-yard field goal by Noah Aeppli with 8:05 remaining in the third quarter then added a 15-yard touchdown run by Brenton Krebs to end the third and give Bermudian a 17-14 lead to open the final quarter.

Van Syoc, who ended the game with 302 yards in the air, found Clayton Stine for a 10-yard touchdown to put Shippensburg back on top.

The Eagles then put together an impressive 85-yard drive that resulted in a nine-yard touchdown run by Addison Wheeler to put them up 24-21 with just 4:28 remaining in the game.

That didn't last long, however, as Van Scyoc found a streaking Gusafson for the 70-yard bomb on the very next play from scrimmage to put the Greyhounds in the lead, 28-24, with 4:12 left.

After a desperation pass that resulted in a Ship interception, the Hounds weren't done trying to make it interesting - a fumble gave the Eagles the ball back with 1:32 left. Two plays later Shippensburg finally put the game away on a Cain Fridinger interception.

Shippensburg will be back in action at home next Friday night when it hosts division rival Waynesboro.
