Chambersburg's defense can't slow Shippensburg
The Shippensburg football team traveled to Chambersburg for a non-league matchup, Friday, and took down the Trojans 20-7. Check here for highlights! Video by Lindsey Smith
For the majority of Friday night's football game, Chambersburg had Shippensburg's run game figured out.
The Greyhounds had just 12 rushing yards during the entire first half. But Ship finally figured the Trojans out, scoring an insurance touchdown on a 10-play, 91-yard drive. The Greyhounds walked away with a 20-7 non-league victory at Trojan Stadium.
"We had a really good game up front," Shippensburg center Nick Kubala said. "Toward the left side of the line, we were really good on traps and bellies. That's the play that we ran like the entire drive, and it was working for us, so we just ran with it."
Despite being stuck on the ground, Shippensburg (2-0) still managed to score two rushing touchdowns in the first half. But those were thanks in large part to quarterback Carter Van Scyoc's arm.
Ship's first-quarter touchdown was set up with a 71-yard pass from Van Scyoc to Cody Gustafson. On the Hounds' second touchdown drive, Van Scyoc completed three passes of 10-plus yards before scampering in for a one-yard score of his own.
"(Working with Carter) has been good so far," Gustafson said. "Tonight was a little bit tougher because they kind of double-teamed me. But if teams are going to do that again, we'll see what we can do about getting the ball out there a little bit more."
Chambersburg (1-1) tried its best to keep up, and if it weren't for a few costly penalties, the Trojans might have been able to do just that. Early on, Chambersburg was moving the ball well, but after Tyler Collier completed a long pass on the opening drive, it was immediately negated by a holding penalty.
Late in the third quarter, Sean Vessah nearly got the Trojans on the board with a catch, but he was tackled just outside of the end zone, setting Chambersburg up with first-and-goal from the four. But it wasn't too long before those hopes were dashed by more flags.
Kaden Hoover completed a pass in the end zone to Collier, but it was called back for offensive pass interference.
"Obviously they killed us big time," Chambersburg coach Mark Luther said. "We got through a quarter and have four or five holding calls, and they don't have anything? I don't know until we look at the film and see, but I'm not sure if it's 'cause we're not working or not moving our feet, but it's very frustrating."
The Trojans were also thwarted by Ship's strong pass defense. The Greyhounds finished with three interceptions, and would've had a fourth by Adam Houser if it weren't for a penalty for roughing the passer. Gustafson had two picks, and Brandon Wheeler had the third.
"Wheeler is not going to catch it like Cody does," Shippensburg coach Eric Foust said, "but he's going to tip the ball away, and he's going to smile and run back for the next play."
Collier said, "It was tough to read the defense that they were playing. A lot of times I let go when I probably shouldn't have, but I had trust in myself, but some of the reads I made were wrong."
NOTES: Clay Myers led the Trojans with 48 yards on the ground; Philip Torres gained 80 yards for Ship ... Foust was complimentary of Chambersburg's defensive line, saying "Those two big guys, (Kelton) Chastulik and (Myles) Braxton, they're nice football players, and they can shut down a run game inside."
