Van Scyoc has strong debut in Shippensburg win

The Shippensburg Greyhounds blanketed the Dover Eagles 42-6 behind a stellar performance by first-time starting quarterback Carter Van Scyoc on Friday night at Veterans Stadium.

Making his first career start against the Eagles, Van Scyoc threw four first-half touchdowns to get the Greyhounds out to a large lead and the Shippensburg defense did the rest, holding Dover quarterback Alan Hansel to just 70 yards in the air and allowing only one touchdown to the Eagles.

The only yardage the Eagles could gain was on big plays, but Dover could not put together a solid drive for the whole game.

"I think that we could've played a little bit better defensively," Shippensburg coach Eric Foust said. "There were some run outs that happened that worry me and there's some little things that need to be fixed. There's definitely a little bit of rust to be knocked off. Our offensive line wasn't as fluid as I wanted it to be, but I think once we've fixed those small things we'll be in good shape."

Strong secondary play was a large part of the defensive success the Hounds had in the game as Hansel was only able to complete four passes for the whole game.

The Greyhounds dominated the Eagles on the offensive end of the football too. Led by Phillip Torres (105 yards, 2 TDs) and Adam Houser (86 total yards), Shippensburg racked up 180 yards on the ground in addition to the 190 that Van Scyoc produced in the air.

Torres, who is 5-foot-8, ducked and weaved through Dover defenders and broke out on large runs multiple times throughout the game, while Houser was content to run straight through the line and over opponents. The Hounds had a very nice balance of running and passing and Van Scyoc showed that he is a dual threat quarterback, dancing around in the backfield and gaining first downs with his legs.

Foust said, "Carter did a very nice job tonight. I wasn't very worried about it coming into the game and I would say he played as expected tonight."

The connection between Van Scyoc and wide receiver Cody Gustafson was uncontainable - Gustafson was on the receiving end of three of the four touchdowns and finished with 120 yards.

"Cody does really well with running his routes and Carter did a good job of finding him," Foust said.
