H.S. FOOTBALL: Shippensburg puts a 42-12 beating on Mechanicsburg

MECHANICSBURG >> A 21-point scoring binge in the second quarter enabled Shippensburg to break open a scoreless game and the Greyhounds went on to wallop Mechanicsburg 41-12 in a non-league football game Friday night.

Cole Friese opened the scoring with a 5-yard run, Wade Mills caught a 34-yard scoring pass from Tyler Gustafson and Gustafson hit the end zone on a 2-yard run to make it 21-0 at halftime in favor of Ship (3-2).

The opening minute of the third quarter was a blur, with three touchdowns scored on the first four plays of the half.

The Hounds' Dion Ware scampered 73 yards for a touchdown, followed by a 58-yard run by the Wildcats' Elijah Strawbridge, followed by a 69-yard pass from Gustafson to Mills.

Ware then finished things off with a 5-yard run before the end of the period.

Shippensburg did not score in the first quarter and Jackson VanHorne failed to connect on a 28-yard field goal. But its next drive used eight plays to go 71 yards, finishing with Friese's run, and the Hounds had smooth sailing after that.

Ware finished with 179 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Tyler Gustafson hit on 8 of 10 passes for 165 yards and Mills snared four passes for 119 yards.

For Mechanicsburg (0-5), Strawbridge ran 17 times for 132 yards and caught five passes for another 49 yards.
