H.S. FOOTBALL: Waynesboro knocks wind out of Gettysburg's sails, 33-0
GETTYSBURG >> After putting on the sledgehammer against Gettysburg on Friday night, Waynesboro's football team proved that last year may in fact not have been a fluke.
The Indians looked like a well-oiled machine, especially in the first half when they racked up a 26-point lead. But it was the defense that was most stifling, holding the Warriors to a mere 43 yards of total offense in a 33-0 non-league victory.
"Our defense was lights out," Waynesboro coach Steve Myers said. "They're doing everything well. We stopped the run phenomenally. If they keep fighting like that, we're going to be in every game."
The Warriors (1-2) simply could not get anything going offensively in the first half. Gettysburg had only one pass completion in the first 24 minutes and finished with negative-four yards in the half.
"Their defensive line does a great job of taking off," Warrior coach Matt Heiser said. "That No. 11 (Forrest Rhyne) is a very good middle linebacker. Out of all the linebackers I've seen so far, he's probably one of the better ones. He does a great job of anchoring that defense."
The Indians (3-0) finished with three sacks and several tackles for a loss.
"I think we did a lot of things well," said Waynesboro's Trevor Biller, who had one of those sacks. "We were fast tonight and didn't take a play off. I really think we needed to get to the quarterback more, but that's just 'cause I love getting to the quarterback."
On the flip side of the ball, the Indians were just as productive. Waynesboro racked up 501 total yards, including 324 on the ground.
Matt Peck, the area's leading receiver a year ago, also had quite a few plays for the highlight reel. He got the scoring started midway through the first quarter. Peck caught a quick pass from Brady Riddell and took it to the house for a 52-yard touchdown.
On Waynesboro's second play of the second quarter, Riddell took his time, waiting for Peck to get open. He found him in the seam, and Peck did the rest of the work, earning a 73-yard score.
"The first two games weren't great for me statistically, but I did other things to help out as well," Peck said. "It did feel good to score those long touchdowns, though."
Waynesboro also got a touchdown apiece from its top three running backs, Brady Beckner, Jake Wertz and Aiden Smith. "All three of them really pounded the ball," Myers said. "Riddell had some good passes, too. We mixed it up really well tonight, and we executed well."
Gettysburg was also hindered by an injury to starting quarterback Tyler Wilt late in the second quarter. He took a shot to the ribs and had the wind knocked out of him.
"He felt good enough to come back defensively, but I thought I'd give the junior (Josh Clapsaddle) a nod and let him have a couple reps," Heiser said. "Clap has a nice touch on the ball, and a couple of his balls were able to be caught, so that's something to look forward to."
