H.S. FOOTBALL: Fairfield hands James Buchanan 34-6 defeat

FAIRFIELD >> James Buchanan struggled to find any kind of consistency on the offensive side of the football on Friday night, and it resulted in a 34-6 non-league defeat at the hands of Fairfield.

"We just keep fighting ourselves, and the mistakes aren't helping," Rocket coach Andy Stoner said. "We were down 7-0 and were driving. We got the ball down to their 30 as the first quarter ended. Then, on the first play of the second quarter, we fumbled it away."

By the end of the first half, the Rockets (0-2) trailed 14-0. It only got worse, as the Green Knights (1-1) racked up a 27-0 lead midway through the fourth quarter before James Buchanan found the end zone.

The Rockets' only touchdown came on a deep pass from Remi Spoonhour to Clay Ziemba, who took it to the house for a 70-yard score. The Rockets had other opportunities, but a pair of turnovers and a few untimely penalties cost them.

"We had a third-and-three one time, and committed a penalty and now it's third-and-18," Stoner said. "You can't do that type of stuff if you want to win a high school football game. We can't be doing those things to ourselves in addition to playing the other team."

JB managed just 212 total yards of offense and were led by Ziemba, who had two catches for 75 yards.

Seth Carbaugh once again had a fine effort on both sides of the ball. He was the leading rusher with 60 yards on 12 carries, and he also racked up 14 tackles. Caden Ficks had 10 tackles, and Dustin Walker notched six. Canden Krenzer and Jackson Ellis both sacked Fairfield's quarterback once.

Quarterback Dillon Sanders managed 32 yards on seven carries in his return, and Kenny Gordon finished with 29 rushing yards.
