WAYNESBORO >> Anyone who followed Waynesboro football last year knows about the talent and exploits of wide receiver Matt Peck, but if Charlie Patterson continues to produce the way he did in the Indians' 60-28 victory over Kennard-Dale in football action Friday night at Buchanan Automotive Stadium, opposing teams are going to have a hard time slowing down the Waynesboro passing game.

Peck was held in check, for the most part, as he had two catches for eight yards and a touchdown. It was Patterson that the Rams were unable to contain – the 6-foot-2 senior wideout hauled in five balls for 189 yards and two scores. He also set up another score with a long gainer through the air.

"Charlie told me to look his way and he'd be open," Waynesboro quarterback Brady Riddell said. "I did and he was."

Patterson's only catch of the first half was a 46-yard pickup and set up a Jake Wertz touchdown from one yard out that put the Indians ahead to stay, 14-9, with 4:17 left in the first half.

Brandon Baer returned a fumble 76 yards with 1:31 left until halftime to give the Indians a 20-9 lead that they took to the half.

Lightning forced a delay of 70 minutes at halftime, but it didn't slow the Indian attack. In fact, Riddell and Patterson took off after the break. They connected on a post pattern for a 55-yard score just over a minute into the third quarter, and after the Ram' Kyle Wooldridge answered with a 7-yard scoring pass from Dalton Stike, Riddell and Patterson struck for another post route and a 32-yard score this time.

"Their one safety was dropping down and I was able to run past the other one," Patterson said. "Brady threw me some nice passes and I was able to catch them."

A junior, Riddell was making his first varsity start and he didn't disappoint – he was 11-of-25 passing for 279 yards with three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.

"It feels good to win, but we've got a lot to work on," Riddell said. "We had too many turnovers, too many penalties and too many mistakes. We've got a lot of things that we need to improve on."

Waynesboro (1-0) forced seven Ram fumbles, recovering four of them, but the Indians also turned the ball over four times (two fumbles lost, two interceptions) and committed seven penalties for 85 yards.

"Our motto is, 'Don't be good, be great,'" Waynesboro coach Steve Myers said. "I saw a lot of good tonight, but we weren't great. We've got a lot of stuff that we need to clean up."

Wooldridge added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown catches (61 and 74 yards) and finished with eight catches for 205 yards and three scores for Kennard-Dale.
