Roundup: Chambersburg puts up fine fight in overtime loss to Cumberland Valley

CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg's field hockey team put Cumberland Valley to the test on Wednesday night, but the Eagles grabbed a narrow victory, scoring in overtime to ensure a 2-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory.

"What a game; from start to finishing, my girls played hard and together as a team," Trojan coach Jen Amsley said. "They believed the could beat CV, and they darn near did. We took them to OT, which is probably more than anyone expected."

Cumberland Valley took a lead midway through the second half with a goal by Taylor Nesmith, but the Trojans (7-9, 5-8 MPC) weren't deterred. Just seven minutes later, Rachel Dusman sent a ball from the 25 yard line up to Molly Keefer on the left side of the field. Keefer was inside the circle, and she slammed the ball to the far post for Chambersburg's lone goal of the game.

Madi Georgiana became the hero for CV with the overtime winner.

"Rachel and Liza (Ernst) led the attack, while Kaylea (Garman), Madison (Schmus) and Jessa (Corwell) led the defense," Amsley said. "We showed that we are a force to be reckoned with tonight. The girls came to play and left it all on the field."

Ari Burke had a great effort in net for the Trojans. She finished with six saves.

"She played fantastic and stopped several good shots on goal," Amsley said. "She is one of the reasons we were in the game from start to finish."

EAST JUNIATA 4, FORBES ROAD 3 >> With just three minutes left in the game, Raven Wirrick netted a goal that gave East Juniata a non-league victory over Forbes Road.

The Cardinals (15-3) had not lost since Sept. 19.

"Even after they scored, we had chances," Forbes Road coach Carol Cline said. "With 28 seconds left, Kiersten Cline went down with an injury, but after that, we were threatening in there. We just couldn't get it tied back up."

Kiersten Cline led Forbes Road with a pair of goals, while Brittany Truax has a goal and an assist.

The Cardinals now have a two-week break before the District 6 championship, which is scheduled for Oct. 28.
