FIELD HOCKEY: Saturday's roundup

CARLISLE 2, CHAMBERSBURG 1 >> Taylor Shughart scored her second goal of the game with just 46 seconds left in the second half to lift Carlisle to a 2-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory over Chambersburg at Trojan Stadium on Saturday.

Shughart took off on a breakaway and Trojan goalie Arianna Burke came charging out to meet her. Burke did a layout and hit the ball with her pads, but the ball popped up into the air and the momentum enabled it to roll into the cage.

Ellie Tate assisted on her first goal.

For Chambersburg (2-1, 1-2 MPC), Liza Ernst scored the goal.

Trojan coach Jen Amsley said, "Liza blew past several defenders with some excellent stickwork and took a nice shot on the far post past the goalie. Liza and Rachel Dusman worked hard and deserve credit. Carlisle outplayed us in the first half. We dominated in the second half until the final minute.

"We called a timeout to set up a play and we executed it, but Carlisle somehow recovered the ball and sent it long. My last words in the timeout were that we can't get beat on a breakaway. We had a defender with (Shughart), but she was not able to slow her down or take the ball away. Arianna made a great effort, but the ball bounced their way."

GREENCASTLE WINS BIGLERVILLE TOURNAMENT >> Greencastle-Antrim played two impressive games, and it led to a championship trophy in the Biglerville Tournament.

The Blue Devils (3-2) got their biggest test in the opener against Susquehanna Township, holding on for a 3-2 win. They then beat Biglerville 1-0 in the final.

Greencastle jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead against the Indians on goals by Lexie Sibbio and Sydney Robertson. Then 11 minutes into the second half, Greencastle got some insurance when Lauren Cole assisted Jameela Dahbi for another goal. But Susquehann Twp. wouldn't go down without a fight.

The Indians got a goal back just 55 seconds after G-A's third goal, and they scored another less than five minutes later to make it 3-2. But Greencastle's defense warded off Susquehanna the rest of the way.

"Our defense tightened up and held the lead, surviving a last minute onslaught that included four consecutive corners after time expired," G-A coach Becca Farson said. "Despite a slick field and steady rain, we probably played our most complete game of the season."

The Indians out-shot the Blue Devils 14-12, but Greencastle goalie Mackenzie Oberholzer came up big with 12 saves.

Despite downing Biglerville just 1-0 in the final, Greencastle dominated play. The Blue Devils out-shot the Canners 34-0 and had a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners. Dahbi scored the lone goal of the game on an assist by Racheal Marconi, who was named the Offensive MVP of the tournament.

"The girls were fired up for the opportunity to win the tournament, and we played a really dominant game," Farson said. "It was a great team effort, and it has been great to see so many girls contributing to our offensive output."
