FIELD HOCKEY: PIAA votes to eliminate ties in state finals

The PIAA Board of Directors on Wednesday evening voted unanimously to use penalty strokes, if necessary, to determine the outcome of future state field hockey championship games.

Under the previous rules, state title games that were still knotted after two overtime periods were ruled ties and co-champions were declared.

That was the case in November when Palmyra and Penn Manor battled to an unpopular 1-1 draw in the Class AAA state championship game and subsequently became co-state champions.

The outcome of that game sparked debate on the issue of state championship games ending in ties, eventually leading to a recommendation by the state field hockey steering committee to amend the overtime rules for state title games that the PIAA board adopted on Wednesday.
