TRACK & FIELD: Area athletes collect 5 gold medals at Stan Morgan Invitational


CARLISLE >> It was a fine day to compete in a track & field invitational, and the area's athletes took advantage of the great weather on Saturday at the 27th annual Stan Morgan Invitational.

Franklin County athlete brought home give golds and a slew of other medals.

James Buchanan's Peter Hughey had the area's best day. He captured first in his signature race, the 400. He clocked in at 49.04. Hughey also added a second-place finish in the 100 dash with a time of 10.9 and took fourth in the 200 (22.84).

Waynesboro's Lilly Harnish also had a pair of splendid performances. She cleared 5-4 in the high jump to win the event and placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 36-3.

Chambersburg swept the rest of the three golds for the area. Nate Long won the javelin with a heave of 173-4 and placed fourth in the shot put (45-2). Teammate Kelton Chastulik won the shot, throwing 48-5.5, which was 10 inches farther than anyone else.

Finally, Abby Yourkavitch represented the Lady Trojans with a victory in the 3,200, which was a very strong event for the team. She was followed in second place by Kaylee Mowery (11:23.74), and Cadie Kiser came through with a sixth-place finish in 11:53.14.

Chambersburg also got a second-place finish from Kendall Keepler, who cleared 6-2 in the high jump, and Noah Shatzer (110 hurdles, 16.7) and Chris Wurtz (3,200, 9:55.64) both placed fourth in their respective events. The Trojans placed fifth in the boys team standings with 40 points.

Kiki Shindledecker and Hollister Rolls helped the Maidens have the highest area girls team finish with 38 points. Shindledecker placed third in both the 200 (26.44) and the 100 (12.5). Rolls came in fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.2.

Waynesboro also got a pair of strong performances from its boys. Christopher Payne captured second in the pole vault by clearing 13-0, and Ogo Akamelu placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.1).

The high jump was a strong event for the Rockets. For the girls, Jenna Carbaugh tied for third after clearing 5-0, and Clayton Bendell tied fourth on the boys side by clearing 5-10.

For Shippensburg, Zach Greenawalt tied for third in the pole vault (12-0), and for Greencastle-Antrim, Lauren Hirneisen was fourth in the 1,600 (5:16.9).
