TRACK & FIELD: Wednesday's roundup, Chambersburg evens record at .500 with sweep of Mifflin County

CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg's track & field teams evened their records at 2-2 with a pair of Mid Penn Commonwealth Division wins over Mifflin County.

The boys got off to a great start, winning the 4x800 relay and sweeping the hurdles, then rode that momentum to a 108-42 victory. The girls won all but two events on the track and earned a 106-44 win.

"We finally got some nice weather, and I really felt like the kids capitalized on that opportunity," Chambersburg boys coach Bob Walker said. "You like to see that as a coach. We swept the relays, and we almost won the meet on the track alone. A lot of people were responsible for those wins; it wasn't just one or two people."

Tanner Amsley kick-started the success for the boys (2-2, 2-2 MPC). Despite trailing by at least 20 meters heading into the last leg of the 4x800, he past his Huskie opponent rounding the first turn, and the Trojans went on to win the race by nearly 10 seconds.

"That really inspired our whole team," Walker said. "But I cautioned our captains: Remember the Cumberland Valley meet. We started off well, but we needed to finish. The boys kept the hammer down the entire meet."

Kelton Chastulik picked up a pair of wins, throwing the shot 47-5.5 and the discus 148-2. Nate Long was first in the javelin (148-2) and second in the shot (42-10).

"The throwing trio of Kelton, Nate and Nery (Gordiano, second in discus) got a lot of points for us," Walker said. "Kendall Keepler is getting better every day. He's never cleared 6-2 outdoors before, and he had a lot of nice attempts at 6-4."

Keepler took second in the event. Also, Alex Aquino-Flores had a season best time in the 400, clocking in at 52.6 seconds to win the event.

Like the boys, the Lady Trojans (2-2, 2-2 MPC) swept the relays, recording season-best times in all three.

"(Abby) Yourkavitch, (Cadie) Kiser and (Kaylee) Mowery did their normal scoring for us," Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said. "But also, Ally Neidigh and Cassie Essie had really good meets today, and Mara Leary scored some good points for us too. Cirsten Kelly and Miana Harrison continue to do a great job for us in the sprints."

Madison Swain recorded a personal best in the 400, finishing in 1:05.4 to take third place. Reagan Winebrenner took second in the shot with a PR throw of 33-4, and Mathia McKay threw the javelin 102-0, her first time over 100-feet, to place second.

"We had a great day overall," Monheim said. "It was our best day on the track by far of the season. The weather was great, so the performances across the board were very good."
