BOYS TENNIS: Saturday's roundup, James Buchanan's No. 1 doubles team earns MPC title

ENOLA >> James Buchanan's No. 1 doubles team of Isaac Shenton and Josh Summers were seeded No. 1 going into the Mid Penn Conference Class AA boys tennis tournament, and that's exactly where they finished.

But it didn't come easy.

The Rocket duo played Bishop McDevitt's team of Cedric Humphrey and Elliott Brown in the semifinals and had to work hard to pull out a 7-5, 6-7 (7-3), 6-0 victory.

JB coach Terri Beegle said, "They were playing not to lose in that first one, so I took them for a walk, and they said, 'We know what you're going to say: 6-0.' And I was going to say that – just play your game and you'll be fine."

In the final, against East Pennsboro's Shawn Manatt and Tyler Hamilton, Shenton and Summers prevailed 6-2, 6-4.

"They went ahead 5-0 in the first set, and then were a little nervous in the second set," Beegle said. "Josh got a lot of first serves in and Isaac made some good returns."

The Shenton-Summers team now has a 16-2 record for the season.

MERCERSBURG 7, HUN 0 >> Mercersburg Academy won each of the six singles matches in straight sets, giving up no more than three points in any set, and also captured all three doubles matches.

The Blue Storm are now 4-2 (3-1 Mid-Atlantic Prep League).
