BOYS TENNIS: Wednesday's roundup

CHAMBERSBURG 4, CARLISLE 1 >> Chambersburg got into some tough matches with Carlisle, but pulled out a Mid Penn Commonwealth Division win.

The Trojans (4-2, 2-0 MPC) had just two straight-set victories, with Jay Padalia earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Garrett Ernst and Nayyer Malik, who won 6-1, 7-5.

Chambersburg JV coach Mike Kolumban said, "Jay continued his game plan of consistency, strategy and quickness, and even though Garrett and Nayyer had some trouble in the second set, they were able to stay ahead throughout."

Aaron Palm rallied from a rough first set to pull out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, and Haris Ahmed and Naushair Hussain also had a come-from-behind win at No. 1 doubles, pulling out a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

"Aaron's match was exciting, and he played with a lot more focus after the first set," Kolumban said. "After losing the first set, Haris and Naushair really focused on winning their service games, and they utilized every opportunity to move to the net in the third set."

PALMYRA 3, JAMES BUCHANAN 2 >> James Buchanan nearly pulled off a Mid Penn Colonial Division upset, but were ultimately edged by Palmyra.

"We put a scare into them," JB coach Terri Beegle said. "Palmyra is an undefeated AAA team, and it was a big match. (Palmyra was) scared; they didn't want to lose, and they played tight."

Chance Wishard took a victory at No. 1 singles for the Rockets (4-4, 1-4 MPC), and Hunter Sowers gutted out a win over Eric Cole. He won the first set, 8-6 in the tiebreaker, before dominating the second, 6-1.

The most difficult loss for JB came at No. 1 doubles. Isaac Shenton and Josh Summers were defeated, 6-4, in their first set, before storming back to claim a 6-1 victory and send it to a decisive third. But Campbell Graff and Juan Cruz pulled it out, 7-5, to ensure the team victory.

"We were up 3-0 and 4-1 in that set, and I was getting nervous and didn't want to get my thoughts too far ahead," Beegle said. "But then it was 5-5, and we just couldn't get our serves in. There were some unforced errors that were uncharacteristic of them, and we started playing not to lose at that point."
