DIVING: Chambersburg's Nick Cover finishes 9th in finals at AT&T USA Diving National Championships

ORLANDO, FLA. >> Nick Cover has yet to enter his sophomore year of high school, but that hasn't stopped him from racking up some big accolades.

The Chambersburg diver competed in the AT&T USA Diving National Championships in Orlando from August 1-9, and he more than held his own. He finished ninth in the finals on platform in the 14-15 age group with 328.55 points, and he also qualified in the 3-meter and finished 15th.

"I did pretty well, and it was a great experience," said Cover, who finished ninth in the PIAA Class AAA Diving Championships as a freshman. "There were one or two dives that could have been better, but overall I think I did well and handled the pressure well."

In a group of around 30 divers, Cover finished 12th in the semifinals. He then jumped a few more spots in the finals to finish ninth. He went into the championships seeded fourth.

"I ended up finishing below my seed, but I wasn't upset with it," he said. "I had a great time."

Cover's best dive was his full-in, which is a front 2 1/2 pike off 10 meters with a full twist. Not only can he use this experience to build for the upcoming diving season, but Cover also found some things to work on in the months before it starts.

"There are a couple dives where I have to reach up a little higher to get more points, and I have to work on locking out my arms to get a better entry," Cover said.

Cover also traveled around the city. He visited the Epcot Theme Park as well as a water park during his week-long stay.
