BOYS SOCCER: Chambersburg posts 2-0 shutout over Cedar Cliff
CHAMBERSBURG >> Chambersburg scored a pair of first-half goals and let its defense do the rest Thursday night at Trojan Stadium.
The result was a 2-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division boys soccer victory over Cedar Cliff, the fourth straight win for the Trojans (4-1, 3-1 MPC).
"It was a good, physical game, definitely a battle," Chambersburg coach Corey Grove said. "But the boys stayed composed and we finished out the game strong."
Rafael Bonilla broke the scoring ice with a fine solo effort in the 28th minute. He beat his defender on the left side, bounded into the middle and cracked a shot into the net on the right side of the goal.
Grove said, "Early in the game we had control of the pace, so I felt it was just a matter of time until we put one in. That goal opened things up a little bit."
Five minutes before halftime, the Trojans made it 2-0 when Erik Espinoza assisted on a goal by Nathan Maynard.
"The ball was bouncing around the 18 and Maynard put a foot to it and had a nice finish," Grove said.
Chambersburg finished with advantages of 12-4 in shots and 7-1 in corner kicks. Chandler Schur made four saves to preserve the shutout.
Grove said, "Late in the game one of their guys took a rip and Chandler deflected it out wide. We were happy to post the shutout."
