BOYS SOCCER: Friday's roundup, McConnellsburg outlasts Southern Fulton, 2-1

WARFORDSBURG >> McConnellsburg's boys soccer team jumped out to an early lead on Friday afternoon, and its defense did enough to preserve the lead in a 2-1 Sideling Hill League victory over Southern Fulton.

The Spartans (3-0, 2-0 SHL) got on the board early when Josh Booth scored unassisted just seven minutes in. Then eight minutes before halftime, Jake Boehme assisted Patrick Keefer to give the Spartans a two-goal cushion heading into halftime.

"I thought we did very well possessing the ball tonight," McConnellsburg coach Cory Houck said. "I still think we need to be more hungry in the attacking third, but overall we played well enough to win."

The score remained 2-0 throughout the second half until Juan Mazariegos assisted on a goal by Lynsey Pryor in the 71st minute, but the Indians (1-2, 1-1 SHL) weren't able to get a tying goal.

"We really struggled in the first half stopping their passing," SF coach Scott Varner said. "We came out and played a better second half and had chances to tie it up, but we didn't take advantage."

McConnellsburg out-shot Southern Fulton 23-7 and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Collin Bard had seven saves in goal for the Indians.

"We had some positives tonight and are getting better, but there are still plenty of things for us to work on," Houck said.
