District 5 Cross Country: Fannett-Metal's Steven Glodek wins race, Southern Fulton boys claim team title

BEDFORD >> Despite a day of rain, cold and wind, a number of locals persevered at the District 5 Class A Cross Country Championships on Wednesday afternoon.

Southern Fulton's boys team placed four in the top 10 to easily claim the team title, while Fannett-Metal's Steven Glodek held onto his lead for nearly the entire race and earned the victory with a time of 18:00.

"It felt phenomenal, really," Glodek said. "Ever since I walked off the course last season (when he placed fifth), I knew I wanted to win this one. My goal was to put in all the extra work that I needed to, to get the win, and I have to thank my coach Mathern Mellott for really believing in me."

Southern Fulton's team, along with Glodek, advance to the PIAA Championships to be held next Nov. 7 in Hershey.

Glodek pulled out and stayed ahead of Tussey Mountain's Trenton Husick by only a second or two for nearly two-thirds of the race. But then the boys hit a downhill, and Glodek took off. He eventually won by eight seconds.

Chase Varner paced the Indians with his second-straight third-place district finish. He clocked in at 19:02. Jonah Golden had a fine effort, placing fifth in 19:12. He was just one second behind fourth-place finisher Luther Flores of Windber.

Other top-10 finishers for Southern Fulton included Benji Voight (19:34, 8th place) and Sage Minteer (20:07, 10th).

On the girls side, the Indians placed second in the team standings with 41 points, behind Johnstown Christian (34), but none of the individuals qualified for states.

Southern Fulton's top finisher was Emily Bradshaw, who claimed ninth in 24:04. Madison Baker was 12th with a time of 24:49.

Rockwood's Graycen Breckenridge claimed the girls title in 22:05.
