Cross country: Tuesday's roundup, Chambersburg's boys and girls teams earn Commonwealth crowns

CHAMBERSBURG >> The hard work had been done in August and September, but the Chambersburg boys and girls cross country teams reaped the benefits Tuesday afternoon at the Tim Cook Memorial Course.

The Trojans ran past Central Dauphin (18-47 boys, 18-45 girls) to complete undefeated seasons and wrap up Mid Penn Commonwealth Division championships.

Abby Yourkavitch added to the day's festivities by running the 3-mile course in 18:25, which broke the girls course record by 12 seconds.

"We ran the table, and that's the first time we've won the league since 2011," Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said. "The time gap between 1-5 was 49 seconds, and from 1-7 it was good, too. Our top three guys just ran enough to get the win and Andrew Feldman and Matt Hoover ran hard. Of the 26 guys we ran, 18 of them had their best time ever on the course."

Alex Hayden won the race for the Trojans (6-0, 6-0 MPC) in 16:51. Chris Wurtz was second in 17:01, then after a Rams runner, Feldman, Tanner Amsley, Hoover and Quinn Mangan beat CD's second runner.

Ambrosio said, "We have a lot of depth on this team – our 26th runner today finished 37th and finished in 20:53, which is a seven-minute per mile pace. This is probably the deepest team in the 47 years of Trojan cross country, certainly the deepest in my 27 years."

Yourkavitch used her last home race of her sophomore season to set the course record. Her time beat the previous record of Sarah Morrison (2005), which was 18:37.

Trojan coach Chris Monheim said, "I'm not surprised by what Abby did – she was ready to go after it. But then look at Kaylee Mowery, who ran a 19:04. That was the fourth-fastest time ever by a Chambersburg runner on this course. She gets overshadowed by Abby, but she's really closed the gap on her."

Cadie Kiser, Cassie Essis, Olivia Sommers, Sydney Parson and Ally Neidigh finished fourth through eighth for the Trojans (6-0, 6-0 MPC).

"Kiser had a nice day at No. 3 for us, and Sommers and Parson continue to give good performances at every meet," Monheim said. "There's a real fight for the top five girls.

"Finishing undefeated was certainly one of our goals at the beginning of the season, and that's not easy with Cumberland Valley, Carlisle and State College in our division. That's a real feat."

The Mid Penn Conference meet is Saturday at Big Spring H.S., starting at 2 p.m.

INDIANS SWEEP TRI-MEETS >> Southern Fulton had a good day on the course, besting Bellwood-Antis and Mount Union in both boys and girls meets Tuesday.

The Indians boys (8-2) got a first-place finish from Chase Varner in 18:18, while Jonah Golden was third and Benji Voight placed fourth.

For the SF girls (6-4), Emily Bradshaw placed second in 23:38 and Madison Baker was right behind in third in 24:00. Linsey Pryor took seventh for the Indians.
