CROSS COUNTRY: Saturday's roundup, Chambersburg girls take 3rd, boys 9th at Carlisle Invitational

CARLISLE >> It was a fine day of weather for a cross country run, and Chambersburg's teams did well at the Carlisle Invitational on Saturday.

The Trojan girls placed third as a team in the Challenge division behind Cumberland Valley and Manheim Township, and Abby Yourkavitch finished in fourth place overall. Chambersburg placed ninth in the boys Challenge, breaking a tie with Carlisle by having a higher-finishing sixth runner.

Trojan girls coach Chris Monheim said, "We did considerably better here than we did at last year's meet. District 3 will be tough. It was not our very best day, but it was a strong day."

Yorkavitch led CV's Mady Clahane for the whole race until Clahane nipped her at the line – both finished in 18:13. Yourkavitch's time is the best 5K time in Chambersburg history, bettering the 18:30 posted by Sarah Morrison in 2005 at the same event.

"I knew she'd get that sooner or later," Monheim said. "She led Clahane for all but about the last two feet – she's keeping some really good company."

Also for the Trojans, Kaylee Mowery posted a 19:12, and placed 11th.

Monheim said, "The time gap was 2:40, which is the best we've had, but it's still too big. Kaylee had her best-ever time and ran really well."

Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said, "Overall, I'm kind of pleased. We don't usually gear up for this meet because it's a fast, flat course and the postseason courses are hilly. Our goals were modest – finish in the top 10 – and we did that."

Chris Wurtz was the top Trojan finisher in 28th place (16:40), while Alex Hayden took 50th and Andrew Feldman was 58th.

"Patrick Zook ran his best time (17:40) and Matt Hoover had a good time, too (17:36)," Ambrosio said.

Chambersburg took first place in the ninth-grade race.

In the boys Champions race, the top area finisher was Andrew Johnson of Greencastle-Antrim, in 27th place. Madison Hurley of G-A placed 20th to lead all area girls in the Champions race.
