CROSS COUNTRY: Tuesday's roundup, Chambersburg sweeps tri-meet with Carlisle and Central Dauphin East

COLONIAL PARK >> Chambersburg's cross country teams are cruising through the Mid Penn Commonwealth Division, and they moved two steps closer to the division crown Tuesday.

Both the boys and girls swept Carlisle and Central Dauphin East, improving their records to 5-0 (5-0 MPC). The boys beat the Thundering Herd 26-32 and the Panthers 15-51, while the girls beat those two teams 24-31 and 16-52, respectively.

The biggest key for the boys was Chris Wurtz, who narrowly finished in second place with a time of 17:01. He beat the third-place finisher by one second.

"I'm tremendously pleased with how we ran today. We wouldn't have beaten Carlisle earlier in the year at the Enos Yeager Invitational," Chambersburg boys coach John Ambrosio said. "The big key was to not let them finish 1-2, and then we took the next three spots after that."

Alex Hayden (17:18), Andrew Feldman (17:39) and Tanner Amsley (17:41) finished 4-5-6 to propel the Trojans to the top, and Matt Hoover rounded out the scoring, finishing ninth in 18:09.

"We put nine guys in front of Carlisle's No. 5, and that turned out to be huge," Ambrosio said. "I was very pleased with our effort, especially after running a hard race on Saturday."

The Trojans girls took an early grasp on the meet, taking three of the top four spots. Abby Yourkavitch got the win and broke the course record in the process with a time of 19:39. The record was previously held by Chambersburg's Courtney Group at 19:42. Kaylee Mowery finished second in 20:12, and Cadie Kiser was fourth in 20:42.

"I knew once we had three of the top four that we'd be in good shape, and then we matched that with depth," Chambersburg girls coach Chris Monheim said. "We had the best day of the season so far. I've been looking for this kind of performance since the season started."

Cassie Essis finished seventh in 21:21 and Chambersburg then made a run, with all Trojans finishing 11th through 16th. Olivia Sommers capped off the scoring with the 11th-place finish, clocking in at 21:56.

"Cassie had a great day and out-kicked two girls right before the line, and Olivia is really starting to gain experience," Monheim said. "Our time gaps were smaller than they've been all season, too."
