BOYS: Tuesday, SF clinches league titles

WARFORDSBURG - Southern Fulton’s boys basketball team had one of its most dominating performances of the season, and it resulted in a 73-24 victory over Southern Huntingdon on Tuesday night.

The win clinched the Sideling Hill League title for the Indians (18-3, 15-1 SHL, 14-0 ICC), who had already wrapped up the Inter-County Conference South crown. This is the Indians’ third SHL title and second ICC title in a row, and SF will take on Bellwood-Antis for the ICC Championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Claysburg-Kimmel.

“It was a good Senior Night for us, as we clinched the SHL and ICC titles,” Southern Fulton coach Kent Hendershot said. “We can also clinch the No. 1 seed in the district with a win (Wednesday) at James Buchanan.”

On Tuesday, the Indians rocketed out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and held a 42-14 advantage at halftime.

Trent Rider led SF’s offense with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and three steals. Dylan Gordon was just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, and Branden Lynch was also a force on the boards, pulling down eight and scoring six points. Zach Clark finished with nine points and a trio of assists.

Mercersburg 66, Broadfording 53: Mercersburg Academy and Broadfording were tied 16-16 after the first quarter of a non-league game, but the Blue Storm surged ahead for a 32-18 advantage over the next two quarters to secure a victory.

Playing without leading scorer Luka Sevaljevic, who was out with an injury, Mercersburg (5-13) got a monster game from Elliot Hicks, who scored a game-high 27 points and went a remarkable 18-for-22 from the free-throw line.

Miles Hearon also produced 17 points after hitting four 3-pointers, and Carlos Austin contributed 13 points.

“It was great to see the guys pick up the slack in Luka’s absence,” Mercersburg coach Sean Crocker said. “Elliot did what he has gotten so good at this year and really attacked the rim well. Miles hit some big threes, and Carlos was a solid presence, controlling the pace and tempo for the team.”
