GIRLS HOOPS: Monday's roundup

SAXTON - Monday night, the McConnellsburg girls basketball team emerged on the court ready to play.

With just one game left in the regular season, the Spartans prepped for post-season play with a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference win over Tussey Mountain, 64-44.

“The girls looked like a playoff team tonight,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “We pressed them early and forced a few turnovers, and then start to roll and we never looked back.”

McConnellsburg (14-7, 9-5 SHL, 8-5 ICC) outscored Tussey 28-17 in the first half, and added a 32-point third quarter to give itself a comfortable lead headed into the final frame.

Bronwyne Mellott paced the Spartans with 41 points, just five shy of her career-high. She also had three steals.

Bridgette Ritchey had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and also added three steals.

“They all played their role and got us a win,” Seville said. “My goal for them at the beginning of the season was to get 15 wins and we have one game left with 14 wins. Hopefully they can pull it off.”

Southern Fulton 46, Southern Huntingdon 32: Southern Fulton is gaining momentum with two games left in the regular season, including a big win over Southern Huntingdon in a Sideling Hill League/Inter County Conference game.

The Indians outscored Southern Huntingdon 14-1 in the second quarter, giving them the lead they needed to capture a win. The Rockets matched Southern Fulton scoring in the second half, as each team added 22 points in the final two quarters.

“We really took off in the second quarter,” Southern Fulton coach Meagan Raville said. “Our defense really helped us out with a boost of energy into the half.”

Olivia Mottern locked in a double-double for Southern Fulton (16-4, 11-4 SHL, 9-4 ICC) with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Lakyn Morton scored 10 points, and Drew Gordon added six while grabbing 10 rebounds and four steals. Celina Merchant and Mottern each had four assists.

Northern Bedford 71, Fannett-Metal 54: Fannett-Metal fell in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference game to Northern Bedford, despite nearly scoring more points than it has in the last two games combined.

Northern Bedford outscored Fannett-Metal 23-12 in the third quarter, and the Tigers could not get within four points at the end of any frame.

Morgan Ritchey scored career-high 10 points, while Ally Hoffmann led the Tigers (5-14 2-13 SHL,1-13 ICC) with 17 points.

Everett 53, Forbes Road 20: In the midst of a battle for a playoff berth, Forbes Road lost a tough game to the District 5 Class AA leader, Everett, in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference contest. The Cardinals were outscored 33-8 in the first half.

“We came out very flat,” Forbes Road coach Jeff Gelvin said.” “We were totally out-manned, and they played very well early. They came after us early.”

McKenzie Gelvin had as many steals (6) as she did points. Courtney Schoen also had six points for the Cardinals.

Forbes Road (8-11, 4-10 SHL/ 2-9 ICC) is ranked ninth in District 5-A with the top eight making it to the playoffs.

“We really have to win two of our last three, and we knew our best chance wasn’t going to be tonight,” Jeff Gelvin said. “We played hard in the second half and I think the kids will bounce back and we will play harder in the next two games.”
