BOYS: Shippensburg fends off Warriors in OT

CHAMBERSBURG - With the District 3 tournament just around the corner, Shippensburg needs as many wins as it can possibly get and the Hounds bagged an important one Saturday when they defeated Gettysburg in overtime, 46-38, in boys basketball action in the Dunks for Drew showcase at the CASHS Fieldhouse.

"This was a huge game and it was like a playoff game," Ship coach Ray Staver said. "Our kids really wanted this one and they were very focused."

Shippensburg (13-6), which has now won five in a row, trailed by a bucket in the fourth quarter when Shuntan Hickman's elbow jumper tied the game at 36 with 3:51 to play in regulation.

Gettysburg (12-7) held the ball for the rest of the time and Marquise Camel's floater from the left baseline was off the mark, sending the contest to overtime.

"I kept thinking that they'd get the ball to Camel and that he'd beat us again," Ship senior Wade Mills said. "But our defense stepped up and forced overtime."

Camel's 4-point play on the opening night of the season gave Gettysburg a 57-55 victory back on Dec 4.

"We've talked about that game a lot since it happened. We thought we had it won," Mills said. "But since then, we've lost some games and we knew it was more important to win today to help our district chances, rather than worrying about getting revenge for losing to them."

Ship controlled the extra frame with buckets from Hickman and Carter VanScyoc, staking the Hounds to a 40-36 lead. A pair of free throws from Connor Weikert was all that Gettysburg could muster in overtime.

"They controlled the boards late in the game and that was the difference," Gettysburg coach Jeff Bair said. "They're a little longer than most teams that we face. We didn't shoot well and they weren't allowing us to get extra chances."

Gettysburg shot 14-of-43 (33 percent) from the field.

"We did a great job of keeping them in front of us and not giving them good looks at the basket," Staver said. "Our perimeter guys defended well and Wade and Teagan (Staver) did a nice job inside."

Ship held a 22-21 advantage at halftime, but a strong third quarter allowed the Hounds to open their lead to 34-28 heading to the final frame.

But Gettysburg started the fourth quarter by scoring the first eight points and took a 36-34 lead on Max Lampe's trifecta from the left wing with 4:40 to go.

Mills paced the Hounds with 15 points and grabbed five boards, while Staver had a season-high 13 points and Hickman pitched in with 11.

For Gettysburg, Camel led the way 10 points, while Lampe, Weikert and Ravaugh Dillard each posted eight.
