Long drought hurts Chambersburg boys

GETTYSBURG - Chambersburg mustered only two points over the final quarter and a half of the first half and that was the Trojans' undoing in a 56-45 loss to Gettysburg in the championship game of the Gettysburg Lions Club Holiday Tournament in boys basketball action Tuesday night.

Chambersburg (6-3) took a 10-9 lead on Cole Christian's bucket at the 4:24 mark of the first quarter, but the Trojans' only points for the rest of the first half came on Cade Brindle's hoop with 5:17 left in the second quarter.

The one-point lead ended up turning into a 29-12 halftime deficit when the Gettysburg defense forced miss after miss and converted buckets at the other end of the floor.

"They're very long and very athletic," Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said of Gettysburg. "We weren't attacking enough; their defense forced us to become a jump-shooting team and those shots weren't falling."

All told, Chambersburg shot 5-of-28 (18 percent) from the field in the first half.

"We were more focused tonight than we were (Monday), that's for sure," Gettysburg coach Jeff Bair said. "All in all, we were pretty darn good in the first half tonight."

Trojan junior Cade Whitfield came to life in the third quarter, potting nine points in the frame, but Chambersburg was unable to shave anything off the deficit and trailed, 42-25 heading for the fourth quarter.

For the evening, Whitfield had 18 points and five boards, a night after scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds and earned an All-Tournament selection for his efforts. He was joined on the All-Tourney team by Christian, who had 12 points.

Christian's 3-pointer with 3:19 to go cut the deficit to 47-37 and the Trojans got within 51-43 with 1:14 left, but could get no closer.

"We're a young team. We fought back in the second half and attacked the basket much better," Shreffler said. "These kids fight and grind out every game. They give it all they have and I was pleased with the effort tonight."

Gettysburg (9-2) was led by Marquise Camel's 19 points and he earned the Tournament MVP award.

"We didn't play well enough as a team or hard enough against Delone (Monday)," Camel said. "(Tuesday) we played harder and more as a group."

In the consolation game, South Western earned its first win of the season by defeating Delone Catholic, 55-41.
