BOYS HOOPS: Shippensburg holds Waynesboro to 11 field goals in win

SHIPPENSBURG - It felt like Waynesboro couldn't buy a bucket on Tuesday night.

The Indians shot a dismal 17.4 percent from the field in the first half of a Mid Penn Colonial Division boys basketball game, and by the halftime break, Shippensburg had racked up a 20-point lead. The Greyhounds continued the onslaught in the second half and walked away with a 68-44 victory.

"I think our defense really set the tone in the first half," Ship coach Ray Staver said. "Whether we were in man or zone, I thought we played with a great deal of intensity on the defensive end, and I thought that's where we really established the tempo of our game."

It also helped that Shippensburg (2-1, 1-0 MPC) couldn't miss. In the opening half, the Greyhounds were 14-for-24 (58.3%) from the field. All but one of their nine 3-pointers came in the first half.

"Shooting 3s gives you a decent lead," Greyhound guard Shuntan Hickman said. "If you're shooting the ball well, it opens up the inside of the floor as well. That helped us get it inside to Wade (Mills) and Teagan (Staver), especially later on."

The Hounds opened the game with a 3-pointer from Hickman, and after a pair of free throws by Waynesboro (0-3, 0-1 MPC), Ship went on a 10-point run to build up a double-digit lead in the early going. In the next two quarters, the Indians scored the first points. But 'Boro struggled to chip away at the deficit, and Ship answered with runs of 10 and eight points, respectively.

"It was tough to get any kind of penetration against the zone to try to get to the foul line to do anything to stem their runs," Indian coach Tom Hoffman said. "When it's all said and done, they stacked together different segments of eight- and 10-point runs that we just don't have enough firepower to overcome."

Although 10 different Indians got in on the scoring, no one had more than seven points. And Waynesboro scored only 30 points before Shippensburg took its starters out of the game early in the fourth quarter.

"We'll do everything we can to try to create situations for them to try to put the ball in the bucket, but there's only so many things we can come up with," Hoffman said. "I know it's not for lack of effort. Honestly, Shippensburg is very good, but I thought some of our shots were open. We just weren't putting them down."

Shippensburg didn't have that problem. After having only six points in the first half, Wade Mills was the Hounds' leader offensively with 18 points. Carter Van Scyoc followed with 12 points, and Hickman contributed 11. One big surprise for the Hounds came in the form of Clayton Stine, who got the hot hand in the second quarter. He knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers.

"We shot the ball real well in the first half, especially," Staver said. "We talk about playing inside-out, but tonight, we played outside-in. Having Clayton come off the bench and shoot like that was great."
