Public Opinion Girls Basketball All-Stars

FIRST TEAM

BRONWYNE MELLOTT, McConnellsburg, sr., F: Mellott, last year’s P.O. Player of the Year, checked off every box on her high school basketball to-do list in her senior year. She hit her 2,000th point, broke the school’s all-time scoring record, and won a district championship. Mellott led the area with an astounding 26.3 points per game and became the area’s second all-time leading scorer. “She’s a tough competitor, and a phenomenal athlete,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “She’s been a great leader to the younger kids and she taught them what it takes to get to that level.”

OLIVIA MOTTERN, Southern Fulton, sr., G/F: Mottern was the third F-F athlete to break their respective school's all-time leading scoring record, and finished the year averaging 17.9 points per game. And despite an injury toward the end of the season, Mottern continued to lead her team to success in the Indians’ first trip to the PIAA Sweet 16 since 2013. “She’s just a playmaker,” Southern Fulton coach Meagan Mellott said. “There have been many times where she has carried the team on her back. She has the mindset of a gamer and genuinely loves the game.”

CAT WEBER, Waynesboro, sr., F: Weber was a catalyst in one of the Maidens' most successful seasons in recent memory. She increased her season average from last year by a full four points (19.1) to become the area’s third-leading scorer for 2016-17. She was also tantalizingly close to the school’s all-time scoring record; she had 1,246. “She’s been one of our leaders the last three years. She can score and rebound and she can occupy people,” Waynesboro coach Alison Steiger said. “She was a presence on the floor and she set an example for her teammates and underclassmen.”

MORGAN WAGAMAN, Greencastle-Antrim, sr., G: Wagaman emerged as one of the Colonial Division’s top defenders after stepping into a more prominent role on the Blue Devil team. In addition to taking care of opponents' top offensive threats, she also put up 10.4 points per game and had 57 steals on the year. “You see growth and maturity in every kid, it’s just natural, but Morgan grew the most that I’ve seen since ninth grade,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. “She turned into a great offensive player and she’s aggressive.”

McKENZIE GELVIN, McConnellsburg, sr., PG: In her first year as a Spartan, Gelvin made her presence known as a speedy point guard that fit into McConnellsburg’s scheme seamlessly. She averaged 16.2 points per game and hit her 1,000th point late in the season. “She is a very athletic kid - it doesn’t matter what sport - and she’s very competitive, so that brought a lot of energy to our practice,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “She brought a lot of speed to our offense and her ballhandling skills are great. She was like the missing piece we lost from last season.”

BROOKE EMGE, Shalom Christian, jr., PG: Emge continued her stellar career at Shalom into her junior year, leading the Flames to yet another MDCC title game appearance, averaging 16.8 points per game. With one year left, Emge is in the hunt for 1,000 career points. “It’s amazing to watch her grow as a player, taking on a bigger role, especially in the second half of the season,” Shalom coach Brad Eby said. “She works really hard in the offseason and she takes instructions very well, and is always asking what she can do better.”

ALLY HOFFMANN, Fannett-Metal, jr., F: Hoffmann led the Tigers to their first District 5 tournament appearance since 2013, averaging 14.2 points per game. She also put up 3.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. “She put a lot of work in in the offseason as far as shooting and ballhandling,” Fannett-Metal coach Todd Best said. “She was our floor generator and she ran our offense, and she was our utility person on defense. She is quick and athletic and she just has a really good vision on offense and defense.”

LIZ LOGAN, Shippensburg, sr., F: Liz Logan had a drastic improvement from her junior year, bumping up her season average more than six points, leading the Greyhounds with 13 points per game. “She was a spark offensively all season and she hit many big shots during integral parts of many games,” Shippensburg coach Andrew Markel said. “She led our team in rebounds at 6.6 per game and had 22 blocks this year. She shot 51 percent from the field this year, which is outstanding.”

RACHEL MARTIN, James Buchanan, sr., G: Although it was a down year for James Buchanan, Martin, a senior guard, continued to stand out for the Rockets. She averaged 10.5 points per game and took on her new position as a point guard in stride. “She’s a great kid, and just a hard worker,” JB coach Jenny Lauthers said. “We put her in a new role this year and she did what she could to make us successful. She does everything 110 percent and took on a big leadership role for us.”

EMILY BRADSHAW, Southern Fulton, sr., G: Bradshaw was a quiet contributor for the Indians in the first half of the season, but kicked it into high gear in the latter half, to end her career averaging 8.9 points per game. “Emily is a silent killer,” Southern Fulton coach Meagan Mellott said. “Sometimes you wouldn’t even realize how big of an impact she made until you looked at the stat sheet and looked at film. She knows how to drive and attack and weasel her way into a defense. I think her defense was what helped us tremendously in the postseason.”
