P.O. Male Athlete of the Week: Dylan Gordon
On Monday, Dylan Gordon scored 30 points to surpass the Southern Fulton career boys scoring record with 1,401 points in his career.
It's no secret that Dylan Gordon is good at boys basketball.
He's had countless accolades and achievements, including last year's Public Opinion Player of the Year award.
But despite that kind of target on his back, Gordon has kept up the pace. That was never more evident than this week when Gordon put up 53 points and 33 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Indians. He is the Public Opinion Male Athlete of the Week.
Gordon continued his onslaught with his third straight double-double on Monday night with 17 points and 13 boards, despite scoring just two field goals.
"I don't know the last game he's played in that he had only two field goals, but he found a way to score," SF coach Kent Hendershot said. "He got to the line (13-for-14). He continues to work hard and just lets the game come to him."
Gordon reiterated those sentiments.
"I don't try to force anything to the hole," Gordon said. "If I don't have a lane, I don't force it. I don't feel like I have to try to get all those points every night because someone else will get them for me if needed. I just try to go with the flow."
Now second in the area in scoring, Gordon is averaging an even 21 points through 16 games.
But what's even more impressive is his 46 rebounds in the last three outings.
"I'm just going hard to the rack," he said. "Sometimes I'm missing layups, but I'm in position to get my own rebounds, so it works."
Hendershot said, "He is just so freaking strong, and he has such a drive that makes him so hard to stop. In practice, we say rebounding is heart - how bad do you want to go get it? And I think he literally tries to go get every rebound. The stats talk for themselves."
Winding down on his high school career, Gordon is looking to lift the Indians to their second-straight District 5 Class A championship.
He's unsure about his future plans regarding basketball, but he's hoping to major in biology and move on to grad school to become a physician's assistant.
