McConnellsburg's Bronwyne Mellott scores 2,000th point

Everyone knew McConnellsburg's Bronwyne Mellott was something special when she scored her 1,000th point as a sophomore.

Flash forward two years and Mellott has inked herself into the record book once again - this time as a 2,000-point scorer.

Monday, Mellott became the fifth girl in Franklin-Fulton history to reach the milestone, and is still gunning for the school's all-time scoring record.

With one minute left in the first half against Southern Huntingdon, Mellott stole the ball back after a pass was bobbled at the top of the key, and drove to the left for an easy layup and her 2,000th point.

"I missed a few shots early on, I think I was just anxious, but I knew eight points was doable for me," Mellott said. "(For my 2,000th point) the ball was up between McKenzie (Gelvin) and a girl from Southern Huntingdon so I grabbed the loose ball and went up for a layup. The right side was open, but I thought 'I'm not chancing that,' so I took a detour and went to the left."

Entering the game she needed eight points to reach 2,000. The Lady Spartans (8-4, 5-3 SHL/3-3 ICC) went on to beat Southern Huntingdon 70-38 in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference game.

"Bronwyne was not really getting the ball in her hands too much at first, but once they changed their defense she got the ball back in her hands and she was able to run that game," McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. "We have a lot of scoring threats, and (Bronwyne) has realized in order for us to win, we have to get the ball into some other hands. She is not selfish with the ball by any means and did what she had to do."

With eight games left in the regular season, Mellott is 262 points away from breaking the school's all-time scoring record which has been held by Marla McElhaney since 1991.

"The team got off to a real slow start at the beginning, and we were kind of sluggish," Seville said, "but I think once we got into a rhythm our defense stepped up and converted off some turnovers and fast-breaks."

NOTES: McKenzie Gelvin scored 22 points for the Spartans, while Justice Seville added 11 ... Kellyn Perry contributed six points and eight rebounds ... As a team, McConnellsburg sank 10 3-pointers.
