Waynesboro drops close contest to Hershey

The Waynesboro boys' basketball team traded points with Hershey for most of Tuesday night, but a late mistake ultimately cost the Indians the game.

With the contest tied at 55-55 with about two minutes remaining, a dangerous 'Boro pass was intercepted by Hershey's Jake Wilson. The Trojan guard converted a breakaway layup and Hershey never gave up the lead, hanging on for a 63-57 win in the first round of the New Oxford Holiday Tournament.

Waynesboro will play Bermudian Springs on Wednesday in the tournament consolation game.

"This was a great high school basketball game. They are a very solid team and we have nothing to be ashamed of," Waynesboro coach Tom Hoffman said. " We didn't execute very well in the last two minutes of the game and they made a couple more plays down the stretch than we did. I am sure we will find things on film that we wish we would have done differently, but overall it was a good game where we came up a little short."

In a game with plenty of lead changes, the Indians seemed to have a slight edge earlier on. Waynesboro was challenged by Hershey throughout the first half and led by two at the end of the first and held a three-point lead at halftime.

But the Trojans took control of the game in the third quarter and seemed poised to take a three-point lead into the fourth until Waynesboro's Kyle Hoffman hit three free throws to tie the game at 44-44. Both teams exchanged baskets in the fourth until Wilson's steal and basket started a run that helped Hershey put the game away.

Cameron Keck led Waynesboro with 21 points. Drew Painter had 15 for Hershey.

"Cameron (Keck) was huge tonight. He can beat you so many different ways, I am very happy with his all-around play," Tom Hoffman said. "Kyle also played well again. Eight points, 10 rebounds and six assists is a really solid all-around game for a point guard."
