BOYS: Thursday, Staver's free throws lift Ship

SHIPPENSBURG - With two minutes left in the game, Shippensburg’s boys basketball team faced a five-point deficit against non-league foe Mechanicsburg.

But Carter Van Scyoc reeled off five straight points to tie it, and when Teagan Staver was fouled with 5.2 seconds left, he came up with a pair of free throws, giving Ship a 52-50 victory Thursday night.

“We never said die,” Greyhound coach Ray Staver said. “We were down by six at 49-43 and they missed a layup, which probably would’ve sealed our fate. But we had maybe three steals in the last two minutes, and we converted on them. Our kids didn’t quit, and it was much like a playoff game.”

Van Scyoc started the comeback for Ship (16-6) with a three-point play. He then scored a layup, and when the Hounds stole the ball with 10 seconds to go, Van Scyoc found Staver on the other end of the court. Staver drove to the basket and was fouled on the way up, setting him up for the game-winning free throws.

Staver nearly notched a double-double, by scoring a team-high 10 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Shuntan Hickman scored 11 points, and Van Scyoc had seven of his nine points in the final quarter.

Ship ends the regular season with a 16-6 record, and will face Harrisburg at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Big Spring in a Mid Penn Conference tournament semifinal.
