Shippensburg boys capture MPC Colonial crown

DILLSBURG - Shippensburg finished off a fine run through the Mid Penn Colonial Division on Monday night and will get to add to the banners in its gym.

The Greyhounds earned a 54-46 boys basketball victory on the road at Northern York to clinch the Colonial Division championship for the second straight year.

Ship is now 14-6 after its sixth consecutive win, and finished 11-1 in the division.

“I’m not sure if Shippensburg has ever won back-to-back titles,” Hounds coach Ray Staver said.

Ship won the Blue Mountain League in 1977-78 by beating Littlestown in the title game. The previous year, the Hounds were 18-0 in the BML but lost 51-49 in overtime to New Oxford.

The Polar Bears did not go down easily.

Staver said, “Three times in the first half we had the lead up to six, but they’d bring it down to two. I think eight was the biggest lead we had, but I don’t think we ever trailed, either.”

Shippensburg scored only two field goals in the final quarter, but made up for that by knocking down 11 of 14 free throws. It was 18-for-25 for the game at the line.

“Carter (Van Scyoc) had a big basket for us in that fourth quarter,” Staver said. “We’d had about four or five empty possessions in a row, but we got the ball to him on the block and he put it in.”

Wade Mills led the Greyhounds with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Van Scyoc had 12 points and Cody Gustafson contributed nine.
