GIRLS: Friday, Trojans fall to CD East

CHAMBERSBURG - The Chambersburg girls basketball team has started many of its games with a competitive fire, only to have it quickly burn out in the second half.

Friday was no different as the Lady Trojans fell to Central Dauphin East in a Mid Penn Commonwealth division matchup, 75-34, leaving Chambersburg still in the hunt for its first division win.

Chambersburg (1-18, 0-13 MPC) kept pace with CD East in the first quarter, ending the first eight minutes trailing by just four points, but the offense dried up in the remaining frames, as the Trojans scored no more than eight points in any of the final quarters.

"We played a really good first quarter, then we got into foul trouble and got a little bit tired," Chambersburg coach Barry Purvis said. "But we played a very good first quarter against a good team and I'm happy about that."

Chambersburg's leading scorer Lindsay Embly got into foul trouble early, committing her fourth foul late in the first quarter, keeping her off the court for the entire second half.

The Panthers had 11 point scorers, led by Justyn Robers who scored 20 points, including an 8-for-11 performance from the foul line.

Liz Bishop led Chambersburg with nine points, which tied her season high output, all from 3-point shots in the first quarter.

Greencastle-Antrim 68, Big Spring 37: The Greencastle-Antrim Lady Blue Devils are stepping up their game at the right time, with Jenay Faulkner leading the way in a Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring.

Faulkner shot the lights out of Big Spring’s gym, shooting 7-of-8 from beyond the arc, and 8-of-9 from the field, scoring 24 total points on nine shots.

“She is super efficient,” Greencastle coach Mike Rhine said. “For a person who is known for scoring, getting one point for each shot taken is a good night, but she was off-the-chart efficient tonight.”

Faulkner’s seven 3-pointers only ties her season high, and aided the Blue Devils (16-1, 9-1 MPC) in breaking a school record for most 3-point shots in one game as the Blue Devils drained 14.

Greencastle put five scorers in double-figures, with Madison Sweitzer and Lydia Crist each scoring career-highs with 10 and 13 points, respectively. Hannah Crist scored 11 while Meghan Hirneisen had 10 to round out Greencastle’s top scorers.

Hannah Crist also had eight assists and six steals, while Sweitzer had four boards and five steals for the Blue Devils.

The Lady Hounds (6-12, 5-6 MPC) played a strong second half, but after scoring only 10 points in the first half, it was too little, too late.

For the third game in a row, Kara Newell led Ship’s scoring with 13 points, and she was the only Hound to finish in double figures. Shannon Staver contributed eight points, all which came in the fourth quarter.
