BOYS: Friday, Trojans rally over CD East

COLONIAL PARK - Friday night, the Chambersburg boys basketball team worked its way from a deficit in the second half to pull out a tough and much-needed Mid Penn Commonwealth Division win over Central Dauphin East, 51-43.

The Trojans trailed 36-29 in the third quarter, but ripped off a 10-0 run to end the frame, taking the lead thanks to a 3-pointer from Cole Christian at the buzzer to end the period.

Chambersburg (9-9, 6-7 MPC) outscored CD East (11-8, 7-5 MPC) by a 12-7 count in the fourth quarter to lock in the upset win and keep alive its playoff hopes. The Trojans were ranked No 17 in Class AAAA by the end of the night Friday and the top 20 teams qualify.

“It was a huge win,” Chambersburg coach Shawn Shreffler said. “CD East had just beaten Harrisburg, which is first in our league, and they’ve been playing really good basketball.”

ByShawn Mincie led the Trojans with 18 points, followed by Cole Christian with 10.

"They have a really big kid inside, and he hurt us the first time we played,” Shreffler said, “but this time we had a three-headed monster in (Cade) Whitfield, (Tyler) Collier and (Joel) Torres. Those guys battled him all night long.”

Greencastle-Antrim 56, Big Spring 49: Greencastle has found a rhythm in come-from-behind games, and Friday was no exception. The Blue Devils took home a Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring on Senior Night.

"We played catch-up last night, and come from behind again tonight," Greencastle coach Gary Martin said.

After trailing by four after the first quarter, Greencastle (12-5, 8-2 MPC) outscored Big Spring 16-8 to end the half, but the Bulldogs kept it tight in the remaining frames.

"We held them to nine free throws compared to our 16 and there is the difference in the game," Martin said.

The Blue Devils shot 13-for-16 from the foul line, giving them the boost they needed to walk away with a win.

Brandon Stuhler and Bryan Gembe led the team with 13 points each, while Casey Hoover added 11.

Shippensburg 61, Boiling Springs 46: The Shippensburg Greyhounds used a second-half defensive push to propel them to an important Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Boiling Springs.

After gaining a short lead in the first half, Shippensburg (12-6, 10-1 MPC) stepped up its defense to limit the Bubblers to just seven points in the third quarter.

"Our defense was much better in the second half, and Clayton Stine was really big for us off the bench," Shippensburg coach Ray Staver said. "He had some rebounds and some steals to really give us some momentum in the third and fourth for a good road win."

Shippensburg finished with nine scorers, including six with more than five points.

Stine finished and Shuntan Hickman each finished with nine points, while Wade Mills led the team with 14. Teagan Staver added 11 points for the Greyhounds.

Carter Van Scyoc led the team with eight rebounds, and also scored seven points.

"Cody Gustafson was also big in that second half," Staver said. "He had three or four steals that seemed to end in a layup on the end of every play to stretch our lead even more."

Northern 58, James Buchanan 45: James Buchanan managed only 16 points in the first and third quarters combined, and Northern York took advantage in a Mid Penn Colonial Division game.

No player for the Rockets (11-7, 5-5 MPC) scored more than 10 points. Gage Piper led the way with nine points, and Ryan Hege contributed 10. Jared Pine, Hunter Sowers and Toby Sowers split 18 points evenly.

Jack Walsh led the Polar Bears (8-10, 6-4 MPC) with 16 points.

JB has now lost three straight games.

Shalom Christian 45, Heritage Academy 37: Shalom Christian outlasted Heritage Academy in a low-scoring Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game to earn its fourth straight victory.

The Flames (13-4, 7-1 MDCC) jumped out to a 16-7 lead after one quarter and made it stand up.

With leading scorer Jonah Stains held to just eight points, Shalom got 13 points from Barrett Eshbaugh and 12 each from Micah Lehman and Cameron Roseman. Lehman was 4-for-4 at the foul line in the final quarter.

Faith Christian 73, Cumb. Valley Christian 38 : Faith just had too much offensive firepower, and Cumberland Valley Christian couldn’t keep up in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference loss.

Spencer Propst was the only player for the Blazers to finish in double figures; he scored 10 points and had five rebounds and four assists. Jesus Pena contributed eight points.

Turnovers were especially costly for CVC, which finished with 24 miscues.
