GIRLS: Tuesday, Cougars too strong for Chambersburg

CHAMBERSBURG - Harrisburg scored 51 points combined in the middle two quarters Tuesday night and picked up a 72-33 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division girls basketball victory over Chambersburg at CASHS Field House.

The Cougars (13-3, 7-3 MPC) led 15-6 after one quarter, 40-15 at halftime and 66-25 after three.

“They are very quick and aggressive, and they’re having a really good year,” Trojan coach Barry Purvis said. “We turned the ball over at least 17 times in the first half, and they stole the ball and built their lead.”

Chambersburg (1-15, 0-10 MPC) got nine of Lindsay Embly’s 11 points in the first half. The next top scorer was Shadai Joyner with eight points.

Purvis said, “The girls played hard and we did have a few more girls score tonight.”

Southern Huntingdon 58, McConnellsburg 54: A brutal second quarter came back to haunt McConnellsburg in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference defeat to Southern Huntingdon.

The Rockets trailed by three after one quarter, but outscored the Spartans 20-7 in the second.

“We looked very good in the first quarter, but then we hit a wall in the second,” McConnellsburg coach Brent Seville said. “That’s the trend right now for us - get behind at the half and battle back. But we just fell short; not because of a lack of effort.”

The Spartans (10-4, 6-3 SHL, 5-3 ICC) got 15 points from Justice Seville and 12 each from Kellyn Perry and Bronwyne Mellott.

“I was pleased to get three girls in double figures,” Seville said. “Justice had a good night of shooting and Kellyn had a strong offensive game, too.”

Northern Bedford 48, Forbes Road 43: McKenzie Gelvin was on fire from beyond the arc; she piled up seven 3-pointers on the way to 30 points, but it just wasn’t enough for Forbes Road in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference loss to Northern Bedford.

“We scored (nine points) in the first half, and I think we were still feeling the effects from the McConnellsburg game (last week),” FR coach Jeff Gelvin said. “We came out flat and were losing 25-9. We didn’t decide to play until the second half, and it was too little, too late.”

The Cardinals (5-7, 2-7 SHL, 1-7 ICC) cut the deficit to just two points in the fourth quarter, but Northern Bedford was 12-for-12 from the line in the final frame to ensure the victory.

Courtney Schoen finished with five points and seven rebounds, and Mina Wilt had four steals.
