Boys basketball

Mercersburg 63, Hun 62: Despite missing nine free throws down the stretch, Mercersburg Academy outlasted The Hun School for its first Mid-Atlantic Prep League victory since the 2012-13 season.

"The guys believed they deserved to be there today, and that makes all the difference," Blue Storm coach Sean Crocker said. "We executed the system and the game plan and trusted our teammates. We had 14 assists and 18 made field goals - that's teamwork for you."

Luka Sevaljevic led Mercersburg (5-6, 1-1 MAPL) with 20 points and five assists. Elliot Hicks and Miles Hearon both finished in double figures with 18 and 11 points, respectively. Carlos Austin filled up the stat sheet with five points, five rebounds and four assists.

"Carlos and Elliot each played their best games of the season and were really key to our win," Crocker said.

Girls basketball

Mercersburg 74, Hun 29: Mercersburg Academy jumped out to a 27-2 lead after the first quarter and rolled to a Mid-Atlantic Prep League victory over The Hun School.

All nine players scored for Mercersburg (7-2, 2-0 MAPL), which put four players in double figures.

"This was a great team effort, and we got a chance to give everyone some good minutes in real game action," Blue Storm coach Katie LaRue said. "We worked hard to improve our half-court offense, which is something we haven't done well lately."

Isiuwa Oghagbon and Molly Taylor were both just shy of double-doubles. They scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Mercersburg, and each pulled down nine rebounds. Tori Yoder finished with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals, and Sarah Lyman did notch a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Maddi Jones also contributed 11 rebounds, including eight on the defensive side.

Wrestling

Mercersburg goes 3-2:Mercersburg Academy placed fifth at the Capital Duals after going 3-2 on the day.

The Blue Storm got victories over Potomac (46-36), Washington Latin (64-12) and Boys Latin (42-36), but suffered defeats at the hands of Bullis (52-30) and Calvert Hall (40-39). 

Joseph Yonke had a standout day for Mercersburg. He went 5-0 with three pins at 113 pounds. The only other Blue Storm wrestler with multiple pins was Thomas Yonke, who had two and went 3-1 at 120 pounds.

Boys swimming

Mercersburg 98, Kiski 64 : Mercersburg Academy won every single event en rout to a victory over The Kiski School.

Jake Girard and Eric Oh won all four of their events for the Blue Storm. Individually, Girard took first in the 100 freestyle (50.95) and the 200 IM (2:05.68), while Oh won the 50 free (23.28). Girard and Oh were both members of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays, and Oh was also the anchor leg of the 200 medley relay.

Indoor track & field

Mercersburg boys 2nd, girls 6th: Mercersburg Academy had a fine day on Friday at the Maroon & Black Relays at Episcopal.

The boys captured second with 56 points, and the girls tied for sixth with 22. 

Mercersburg's boys did especially well in the field, where Alex DeGrange and Jake Artz teamed up to win the long jump, and Suky Kuye and Jude Ikekhua were victorious in the high jump. 

"There is a reason it is called track - and field," Blue Storm coach David Grady said. "I was glad to see that all our field event relay teams scored, and in doing so, raised our overall team performance significantly." 

On the girls side, the highlight of the day was Finley Stewart won the 55 dash and teamed up with Rahama Sadiq to place second overall.
