GIRLS: Tuesday, James Buchanan edges Bulldogs
NEWVILLE -- Charity Miller had a night to remember for James Buchanan and it enabled the Rockets to collect a hard-earned win on the road.
Miller scored 25 points and scored the game-winning basket with 12 seconds left to lift JB to a 55-54 Mid Penn Colonial DIvision victory over Big Spring on Tuesday night.
Appropriately enough, it was 3-pointer by Miller, shot from the right wing, that put her team ahead for good.
The Bulldogs (4-10, 2-5 MPC) were able to get a shot off, but it was no good.
“The shots Charity was taking, on some of them she wasn’t even really open,” Rockets coach Jen Lauthers said. “But she hit 7-for-11 on 3-pointers.”
Rachel Martin came up with 12 points and 10 rebounds for JB.
The Rockets (6-7, 4-3 MPC) led 25-17 at halftime, but Big Spring went ahead in the fourth and forced its opponent to foul. The Bulldogs took 18 free throws in the final quarter and made 11.
Lauthers said, “We had to stop the clock, so we kept fouling. When we went ahead, we had to make sure we didn’t foul, and somehow we managed to get out of there without doing it.”
For the game, the Bulldogs were 20 of 29 at the line, while JB was 9-for-11.
“Charity and Rachel had great games, but a lot of our girls made crucial plays, and it was a great team win,” Lauthers said.

Cumberland Valley 67, Chambersburg 15: Defending PIAA state champion Cumberland Valley simply had too many horses for Chambersburg.
The Eagles outscored the Trojans 19-5 in the first period and 28-4 in the second period to lead 47-9 by halftime.
Lindsay Embly scored seven points, including 5-for-7 at the foul line, to lead Chambersburg (1-12, 0-8 MPC). The Trojans had only four players hit the scoring column.
For Cumberland Valley (12-1, 7-1 MPC), Katie Jekot had the hot hand, delivering 27 points, including three 3-pointers. Her sister, Kelly Jekot, added 15 points.

Shalom Christian 52, Grace Academy 50: A pair of crucial steals inside the final minute of play enabled Shalom Christian to pull out a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference victory over Grace Academy.
The Flames (10-1, 6-0 MDCC) retained the top spot in the league thanks to clutch play at the end of the game. After a steal, Brooke Emge missed a layup, but Lydia Harris was there for a putback to give Shalom the 52-50 lead.
At the other end, Brooks Kuhns made another steal and the Flames ran the clock out.
“We played a great first half (ahead 33-20), but they came storming back,” Shalom coach Brad Eby said. “We made 21 turnovers, which is a little unusual, and they found some holes in our defense. But we showed a lot of heart as a team and Brook Kuhns has been on fire the last two games.”
Kuhns scored 19 points and had eight rebounds, while Harris put in 17 points and had seven assists. Emge had nine points and four steals.

St. Maria Goretti 53, Mercersburg 52: Mercersburg Academy took a lead into the final quarter but couldn’t hang on in an Independent Parochial School League loss to St. Maria Goretti.
The Blue Storm (6-2, 1-1 IPSL) were hindered by the loss of Sarah Lyman, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter, causing Mercersburg to have to adjust its game plan.
“We committed too many mental and physical mistakes tonight, and let this one slip away,” Blue Storm coach Katie LaRue said.
Mercersburg was paced by Joana Santos, who scored 13 points and nine rebounds, while Isiuwa Oghagbon scored 12 points and Molly Taylor 11. Tori Yoder finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to go along with six steals and three assists.
