BOYS: Tuesday, Waynesboro upsets Ship, 60-51
WAYNESBORO - Night in and night out, Waynesboro coach Tom Hoffman has seen the same thing happen to his boys basketball team.
The struggling Indians would get down, and they’d hang their heads.
On Tuesday night, that wasn’t a problem. Despite an early deficit to Shippensburg in a tough Mid Penn Colonial Division matchup, Waynesboro never gave up and pulled out a 60-51 upset over the Greyhounds.
“When it got to 19-8, it was almost that feeling of, ‘Here we go again,’” Indian coach Tom Hoffman said. “A couple of games when those times would hit, we would resign ourselves to that being our fate for the night. Tonight, we didn’t do that.”
Waynesboro (2-11, 1-6 MPC) battled back in the second quarter but still trailed by five heading into halftime before outscoring Shippensburg, 37-23 in the second half.
The Hounds (8-6, 6-1 MPC) have now lost five of their last six games.
“They’ve been playing some pretty good teams, so we didn’t want to go in too confident,” Hoffman said. “We tried to just worry about ourselves and focus on our talent. We just needed some things to go our way to get our guys some confidence back.”
Wade Mills led Ship with 15 points, while Shuntan Hickman scored 13 and Carter Van Scyoc contributed 10 points.
The Indians were paced by Mitch Neterer and Cameron Keck, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively. Kyle Hoffman also notched 10 points.
Waynesboro scored seven 3-pointers.
“We were creating some open looks off penetration,” Tom Hoffman said. “Kyle did a real nice job of controlling the game in the second half. We were doing a good job of getting our feet set and converted on some nice looks.”

Northern Bedford 63, Fannett-Metal 48 >> A frosty start for Fannett-Metal - shooting 6 for 32 in the first half (19%) - doomed the Tigers against Northern Bedford in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.
The Tigers scored only four points in the first quarter and trailed 27-14 by halftime.
“In the first half our shooting was colder than it was outside,” F-M coach Greg Best said. “We came out hard in the third quarter and got it within three points, but then we went cold again.”
Lucas Wingert scored eight of his 18 points in the first half to keep the Tigers within range, and he added 13 rebounds. Mikell McGee was held to 13 points, including only three field goals.
Jacob Dasher led the Panthers with 23 points.

Shalom Christian 53, Grace Academy 44 >> Shalom Christian let off the gas a bit in the second half, but it had a strong enough start to overcome Grace in a Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game.
The Flames (10-4, 5-1 MDCC) held a 20-point advantage at halftime before being outscored 28-17 in the second half.
“We started the game with a lot of energy and were able to get out to a good lead,” Shalom coach Danley Shank said. “In the second half, we missed some open shots and they were able to cut into our lead. I thought Jonah (Stains) got us started in the first half, and Micah (Lehman) was able to knock down some open shots, too.”
The Flames put three in double figures - Stains led the way with 19 points, while Cameron Roseman had 12 and Lehman scored 11.
