BOYS HOOPS: Saturday, SF falls in Mt. Cat championship

JOHNSTOWN - For the second year in a row, Southern Fulton’s boys basketball team suffered its first loss of the season at the Mountain Cat Tournament hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.

This time, the Indians fell to Westmont Hilltop (Johnstown) in the championship, 55-41, on Saturday night.

“We like coming here because it’s very good competition,” SF coach Kent Hendershot said. “This game should really show us that we’re capable of playing with good teams, but we’re not executing well enough to beat them yet. We’ll take this as a learning lesson, and it’ll pay dividends later on in the season.”

The Indians (4-1) were hindered from the get-go after Westmont outscored them, 18-7, in the opening quarter. They finished with their lowest offensive output this season by 17 points.

“We just didn’t shoot the ball well,” Hendershot said. “We got some really good looks and didn’t make them. We didn’t play very smart in the first half and dug a hole that we had to keep digging out of all night. We cut it to within seven in the fourth, but we’d make a run, then we’d turn it over or miss a good look.”

Trent Rider and Dylan Gordon were both named to the All-Tournament Team after 23- and 10-point performances, respectively.

Gordon dished out four assists, and he and Branden Lynch split 14 rebounds evenly.

Shalom Christian takes 3rd >> Shalom Christian picked up a pair of victories to finish third at the Shenandoah Valley Tournament.

The Flames defeated Beach Breakers, 51-29, before taking down Fredericksburg Victory, 65-48, in the third-place game.

“We did a good job following a tough loss yesterday and really came ready to play,” Shalom coach Danley Shank said. “(Against Beach Breakers), I thought defensively, the guys got after it and did a much better job communicating. On the offensive side, we shared the ball and played like a team, and were able to have guys knock down open shots.”

Against Beach Breakers, Jonah Stains led the way with 14 points, and Chase Martin followed right behind with 11.

Stains also led the Flames (5-3) against Fredericksburg, scoring 24 points, while Cameron Roseman finished with 20 points. Both knocked down four 3-pointers.

“Offensively, we were paced by Jonah’s 24 and Cam’s 20, but really, I thought Chase did a good job of running point and getting us set up offensively,” Shank said. “We did not get a lot of stops in the second quarter, but other than that, we continued to play a good defensive game.”
