GIRLS HOOPS: Thursday, Bronwyne Mellott sets scoring record


McConnellsburg 66, Northern Bedford 63 >> McConnellsburg's Bronwyne Mellott had a career night in the Spartans' narrow victory over Northern Bedford in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game Thursday, not only breaking her career high, but also the school's single-game scoring record.

She earned her second-consecutive double-double in the win, scoring 46 points and adding 13 rebounds. Mellott stepped to the free throw line 21 times, making 18 (86%) of her attempts, accounting for nearly 40 percent of her points.

Not only was Mellott's contribution a career high for the junior, she also set the single-game school scoring record for the Spartans on the way to scoring 70 percent of McConnellsburg's points.

The Spartans (3-2, 2-2 SHL, 1-2 ICC) changed up their defensive game plan, led by Alexis Mellott and Bridgette Ritchey, who ended the night with six and five steals, respectively.

"We usually have a difficult time matching up with Northern Bedford," McConnellsburg coach Brent Sevelle said. "This was a tremendous effort by our entire team."

The Spartans overcame 11 3-pointers by NBC, including six by Sydney Snyder.

Southern Huntingdon 36, Forbes Road 31 >> Forbes Road eliminated a 15-point deficit to come back and threaten Southern Huntingdon in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game, but was unable put it away Thursday.

After falling to a 20-5 deficit in the first quarter, the Cardinals worked to regain control, but the Rockets' man-defense kept them from the hoop enough to sustain the victory.

"We dug ourselves a hole early," Forbes Road coach Jeff Gelvin said. "We played outstanding defense in the second and third quarters, but we dug too big of a hole. We didn't shoot the ball well - I think a lot of it had to do with their defense - but we had a good comeback in the second half."

After the first quarter, Forbes Road (1-3, 0-3 SHL/ICC) outscored Southern Huntingdon 26-16.

McKenzie Gelvin led the Cardinals with 16 points and also tallied five rebounds and three steals. Malea Truax followed with eight points and five rebounds.

"We have to get more scoring from most everyone," Jeff Gelvin said. "We've been in every game, we just need to find a way to score and win. We play very hard, and I think the wins will come."

Southern Fulton 56, Tussey Mountain 45 >> Southern Fulton overcame home-opener jitters to beat Tussey Mountain in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference victory Thursday.

Led by Olivia Mottern with 14 points, the Indians rebounded from a five-point first quarter to outscore Tussey Mountain 51-37 in the final three frames. Mottern also led with nine rebounds for SF (3-1, 2-1 SHL/ICC).

Freshman Drew Gordon had nine points off the bench and gave the team the push it needed.

"We picked up our defense in the second half, and Drew really was a spark for us," Southern Fulton coach Meagan Raville said. "She had two steals and finished around the basket. She was really a big spark for us defensively and offensively."

Laykn Morton had 11 points and led with five assists, while Celina Merchant and Shaye Smartt each had nine points and four assists.
