BOYS HOOPS: Friday's roundup, James Buchanan wins big

MERCERSBURG -- James Buchanan put 12 players in the scoring column and trounced York County Tech 81-51 in a non-league boys basketball game Friday night.

Zach Vosburg scored 12 points, Toby Sowers added 11 and Hunter Sowers had 10 for the Rockets (3-1), who had eight players with at least six points.

Ryan Hege had seven points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

JB coach Larry Strawoet said, “The kids showed a lot of dignity and class. They did what they had to do to push the score so we could get in all the players. Those other players work hard during the week, too, to make the other guys better.”

Boiling Springs 71, Waynesboro 58 >> The game was much closer than the final score indicated, but Waynesboro suffered a Mid Penn Colonial Division defeat at the hands of Boiling Springs.

The Indians (0-4, 0-2 MPC) trailed by one point heading into the final quarter, but the Bubblers came up big down the stretch, outscoring Waynesboro 25-13 in the final frame. Boiling Springs was 18-for-25 from the free-throw line in the fourth.

Cameron Keck led the Indians with 12 points, while Evan Hine finished with nine points. Kyle Hoffman and Mitch Neterer both put up a pair of 3-pointers and collected eight points each.

McConnellsburg 70, Southern Huntingdon 25 >> The McConnellsburg boys basketball team dominated Southern Huntingdon in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference game Friday.

After an inconsistent first quarter, in which they had six turnovers, the Spartans (2-0, 1-0 SHL, 1-0 ICC) settled in, allowing just five turnovers in the next three quarters.

“We were a little sloppy early but we got into a rhythm,” McConnellsburg coach Dane Pollock said.

The Spartans had three double-digit point scorers, and had 10 different point scorers. Chase Novak led with 19 points and also had five steals, followed by Landon Richards with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Ian Cheatle had 10 points.

“It’s nice to get contributions from everybody, and it will make our practices better,” Pollock said.

Jake Boehme had six points for McConnellsburg and five assists.

Southern Fulton 61, Hancock 11 >> The Southern Fulton boys basketball team used its defense to create offense against Hancock in a non-league victory.

“We just went and took care of business,” Southern Fulton coach Kent Hendershot said. “Defensively we played well in the first half and we made it easy on ourselves; we had a clean night.”

SF limited Hancock to just two points in the first half, heading into the locker room with a 30-point lead, then emerged in the second half to score 22 points in the third frame.

Southern Fulton had nine scorers, lead by Dylan Gordon, who had 18 points. Zachary Clark, who had 12 points for the Indians, also had five rebounds and five steals.

Mercersburg 49, Jefferson 32 >> Mercersburg Academy got off to a great start and went on to capture a non-league victory at the Musselman Classic.

The Blue Storm (2-1) were playing without starting guard Miles Hearon but got big games from Beau Lowery and Jake Rist.

Offensively, Luka Sevaljevic led the way with 22 points, while Carlos Austin scored 10 points. Elliot Hicks contributed eight points.

“It was great to see Elliot hit a couple tonight,” Mercersburg coach Sean Crocker said. “He’d been struggling, and if we can get him going, we are going to be tough to guard. As a team, we must get better rebounding the ball, but that will come with time.”

Tussey Mountain 67, Fannett-Metal 58 >> The Fannett-Metal boys basketball team played a hard game against Tussey Mountain, but fell to the Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference foe Friday.

Despite leading after the first frame, and heading into the locker room with a tie game at halftime, Fannett-Metal found themselves in a trap in the fourth quarter, when Tussey went to a four-corner offensive scheme, forcing the Tigers to foul.

Tussey made 13 of 19 foul shots in the fourth quarter to lock in the win.

“We played relentlessly all game,” Fannett-Metal coach Greg Best said. “We clawed and scrapped all game. I am very proud of all the boys and they all stepped up tonight.”

Mikell McGee had 18 points and six rebounds, and Sawyer Rosenberry had 18 rebounds. Timber Brookens and Lucas Wingert each scored 10 points for the Tigers.

Northern Bedford 52, Forbes Road 43 >> After battling back from a tough start, Forbes Road fell to Northern Bedford in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference game Friday.

Northern Bedford limited Forbes Road (0-2, 0-2 SHL, 0-1 ICC) to just two points in the first quarter, but the Cardinals outscored the Panthers in the middle two frames to tie the game in the third.

Heading into the final quarter, Forbes road trailed by just three points, and were settling in.

"If we could take away the first quarter, we could have come home with a win,” Forbes Road coach Trent Black said. “We didn't score until under a minute in the first. Once we settled down, we cut the lead."

The Cardinals had 10 scorers, led by Aaron Schepis with 18, including two 3-pointers.
