Greencastle's Nathan Starliper flips commitment

Greencastle-Antrim rising senior Nathan Starliper, previously committed to play baseball at the University of Maryland, announced Saturday that he has flipped his commitment to Virginia Tech.

VT is a Division I program that competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

In early June, former Maryland coach John Szefc announced he was leaving to fill the head coaching vacancy at Virginia Tech.

Maryland pitching coach Ryan Fecteau and MD recruiter Corey Haines also made the switch to VT, making Starliper's decision a no-brainer.

"I got along with them at Maryland, and I think I fit in better with the school there and I liked the facilities," Starliper said. "They are also very committed to the baseball program, and I think the new coaches will make the program successful."

Virginia Tech has not made the NCAA tournament since 2013, but with Szefc at the helm, the Hokies look to reverse their recent struggles in the ACC.

“Both Maryland and VT are really good programs, but the ACC is really going to be good competition for him,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said. “He’s going to be throwing against a top-25 team every single time he goes out there.”

Starliper was named a Public Opinion and Mid Penn Colonial Division first-team all-star after leading the Blue Devils with a 1.68 ERA through 41 innings. Starliper fanned 48 batters in nine appearances and also had seven RBIs.

In the next year, Starliper hopes to hit the weight room to bulk up for his future ACC competition.

"I just want to work harder and harder everyday," Starliper said.

Starliper will likely sign his National Letter of Intent during the early signing period in November.
