Unearned run lifts Waynesboro over Chambersburg

Clay Wolfe was living dangerously for most of Monday afternoon.

But between his clutch pitching and the stinginess of the defense behind him, Waynesboro survived a tug of war with rival Chambersburg in a non-league baseball game at Greene Township Park, 1-0.

Wolfe allowed six hits and walked five, but, thanks in part to three double plays, he kept the Trojans off the scoreboard.

"He had command of his fastball today, and he got the ground balls when we needed them," 'Boro coach Greg Chandler said.

Chambersburg (1-1) stranded nine baserunners, and seven were in scoring position.

Trojan coach Scott Folmar said, "This game came down us needing one big hit, and we just didn't get it."

In the first inning, Austin Kopp smoked a line drive right past Wolfe's ear for a hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. Max Armstrong then cracked a pitch in the same area, but Wolfe snagged it and doubled up Kopp at second.

In the second, after a walk, Wolfe induced a 6-4-3 double play. It turned out to be crucial, because the next three batters all reached base. But Wolfe got out of it with a grounder.

"That second inning was the real key," Chandler said.

The Trojans had runners on second and third in the fifth with one out, but Wolfe got a pop-up and grounder. In the sixth, with runners on second and third again, Karsen Rush drilled a liner back up the middle, but second baseman Coby Rogers gloved it waist-high. The Indians then ended the game with another 6-4-3 twin killing.

"We put some good swings on the ball, but couldn't get one to fall," Folmar said.

The Trojan pitchers certainly did their job. Kopp pitched the first four innings and Spencer Seaman handled the last three. Waynesboro managed only three hits - two by Jarret Biesecker - two walks and a hit batter.

But in the inning the Indians scored, two walks and a wild pitch put Bubba Hamilton on third base and he scored when the rightfielder dropped a soft liner by Hunter Clever.

Folmar said, "Kopp and Seaman both did a fantastic job. Only two walks and one hit batter is great. The defense made most of the plays, but that one time we didn't was costly."

"We certainly weren't stinging the ball," Chandler said. "But any time you can win 1-0, that's impressive; especially putting up seven goose eggs against Chambersburg. The defense was outstanding. Biesecker made a couple of great plays at shortstop."
