Mother Nature has not been a friend to the Chambersburg baseball team. With three rainouts last week, Chambersburg entered Monday's Mid Penn Commonwealth game against Cumberland Valley without seeing a live pitch for over a week.

And it showed Monday, when the skies finally held off.

Hesitant bats hurt Chambersburg early in a 3-2 loss to Cumberland Valley.

"We were way too timid at the plate today. Our philosophy at the plate is to stay aggressive and we did not do that," Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. "I’m not sure why, but we were not aggressive enough against a couple of guys who are going to throw strikes all day long."

Chambersburg (6-7, 4-5 MPC) went down in order in the first three innings, and registered just five hits on the day - three in the sixth inning.

One of those hits, however, looked to give the Trojans the spark they needed after going down 3-0. Carlin Christian stepped to bat with two outs and two runners on base and smacked a long ball to left field and everyone in Greene Township Park held their breath.

But in the thick, humid air, the ball dropped just before the fence, putting Christian at second base after clearing the bases, but that's all Chambersburg could muster up.

"That was a big situation, and that gave us a little bit of a spark, but they came in and shut us down," Folmar said.

"I think we took a couple more pitches than we should have," Christian said. "(CV pitcher Joe Cuomo) was looking for a lot of outside pitches, and we were getting behind."

Despite taking the loss, Hunter Brindle pitched well for the Trojans, and continued to keep Cumberland Valley (10-4, 6-4 MPC) on its toes while striking out four batters and standing five runners on base.

"Hunter really keeps you off balance; a big long kid like that and he is sneaky quick and his breaking stuff keeps you guessing," Cumberland Valley coach Levi Mumma said. "When I saw him warm up I thought, 'Aw man we are going to have a rough day,' because that is the kind of guy that gives us fits sometimes."

Brindle also retired CV in order in the first two innings.
