With a daunting schedule before them, and the task of playing six games in six days, Greencastle-Antrim coach Eric Shaner said Friday night that he wasn't going to drive all the way out to Berks County to play in the Muhlenberg Tournament and not bring home a championship trophy.
But unfortunately for the Blue Devils, Shaner's prediction did not come true as Greencastle's undefeated season came to an end with a split at the Muhlenberg Tournament thanks to a 9-4 loss to the host team.
"It’s one of those things - it would be great to undefeated, but our scheduled is too tough; there are no cupcakes on it," Shaner said. "And Muhlenberg is a great AAAA team."
One-hitters: Noah Barnhart threw a five-inning one-hitter for Cumberland Valley Christian on Monday. He averaged two strikeouts an inning in the 5-0 victory over Carroll Christian, as he struck out 10 batters in the first game of the Blazers doubleheader. Barnhart also went 3-for-3 in the nightcap against Carroll.
Hunter Kann and Cole Funk combined to throw a one-hitter for Fannett-Metal in an 11-1 win over Rockwood. They combined to strike out five batters, and Funk walked one after coming in for relief in the fifth inning.
Home run parade: James Buchanan’s Jared Pine and Toby Sowers each crushed home runs in the Rockets' 6-3 win over Trinity for Pine’s first of the year, and Sowers’ second.
Trent Rider also hit a home run for Southern Fulton, his first of the year.
Pitching combo: Braden Lynch, Mitch Potter and Zach Clark combined for a five-hitter for Southern Fulton in a 6-1 win over Clear Spring, and struck out 10 batters between them with no walks.
Escape artist: Waynesboro’s Jerry Verden did not have a warm welcome to the mound Friday, when he came in for relief in the Indians' 10-2 loss to Greencastle-Antrim. When Verden stepped on the mound in the middle of the seventh inning, Greencastle had already scored three runs that inning, and had two runners on base.
Oh, and it happened to be Verden’s first time pitching this season.
But he took the challenge in stride, retiring the next three batters in order to avoid an even more lopsided loss to the Blue Devils.
