Shippensburg’s Nathan Holt played hero Thursday night with a two-run home run in the top of the 10th inning against Boiling Springs, which ultimately gave the Greyhounds the Mid Penn Colonial Division victory.
After three straight losses, Shippensburg (5-4) needed a spark if the team hoped to turn the season around, and it all started with Holt.
“We were up and down with contact, but we were battling,” Shippensburg coach Nate Rosenberry said. “They had a new pitcher in the 10th, and Nathan found a ball to drive.”
It was Holt’s first home run of the season and the team’s third.
Less than 24 hours later, Shippensburg used that momentum in a well-rounded game played against county rival Chambersburg. The Greyhounds won 8-2.
Brown at his best: Forbes Road’s Matt Brown threw a complete-game two-hitter against Fannett-Metal on Friday, all the while striking out 12 batters with just three walks for his best outing to date.
“Brown pitched an excellent game,” Forbes Road coach Randy Gelvin said. Friday was Brown’s first win of the season.
April showers: On Friday, the area saw two game postponements, one game called and a rain delay thanks to a heavy thunderstorm that rolled through Fulton County.
While the Southern Fulton softball team benefited from the rain with a 2-1 win after the game was called in the fifth, the baseball team needed to find some flood waders if it hoped to finish its game against Tussey Mountain.
"We got flooded out ... literally," Southern Fulton coach Dustin Fischer said.
The team had to stand on the bench in the dugout with three inches of water flooding the field. The Indians also used buckets and water coolers to "get to drier ground."
The game will be rescheduled for sometime in May. The Indians were trailing Tussey 5-1 in the top of the fourth.
Target on their backs: The Greencastle-Antrim baseball team is the only team in Franklin and Fulton counties that remains undefeated.
Starting pitchers Derek Measell and Myles Gayman both boast a 3-0 record. Measell struck out 11 batters and walked none in his complete-game outing against Big Spring, while Gayman had 13 strikeouts against Shippensburg, throwing a complete-game two-hitter.
Matt Kline, who is the Blue Devil’s No. 1 closer, has two saves, but is also working hard at the plate. Against Big Spring, Kline was a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3.
“(Kline has) just been a tremendous leader. He’s an alpha male,” Greencastle coach Eric Shaner said.
