New era opens with win for Chambersburg baseball

LINGLESTOWN - The Chambersburg baseball team followed a pretty solid script for its season opener Thursday.

The Trojans got a combined four-hitter from pitchers Austin Suders and Hunter Brindle, the offense banged out 11 hits and the defense did not commit an error. The result was a 6-1 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory over Central Dauphin.

"It's good to get that first one out of the way," new Chambersburg coach Scott Folmar said. "It was a fun day."

The Trojans struck for five runs in the top of the third inning to grab the lead for good. Carlin Christian tripled to lead off, Brindle walked and moved up on a wild pitch, and Suders brought them both home with a base hit.

"That was a really big hit to get things going," Folmar said. "We had a sac bunt, a couple other singles and a walk or two in there after that and got a nice lead."

Suders struggled some in the third inning, but gave up only one run. In his four innings, he allowed two hits, struck out two and walked three.

Brindle came in for the final three innings, giving up two hits and fanning three with no walks.

Folmar said, "Both pitchers threw well. Brindle did a great job and that should help his confidence. We hoped to use him two innings, but he didn't throw that many pitches so we left him in."

Suders and Kevin Carbaugh (1 RBI) were each 2-for-3 and Manning Brookens was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs knocked in for Chambersburg (1-0, 1-0 MPC).

"I was absolutely pleased, more than anything else because of the clean defense," Folmar said. "We made all the routine plays."
