BASEBALL: Chambersburg-Lower Dauphin game suspended

HUMMELSTOWN >> When the rains finally came, it was a deluge.

Chambersburg and Lower Dauphin began their District 3 Class AAAA first-round baseball playoff game at Nye Field under threatening skies and those skies finally opened up in the bottom of the fourth inning, resulting in a suspension.

When the game was called, the Falcons led 3-1 and had runners on first and second base with just one out.

The game will be resumed Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at that point.

The Trojans (12-8) took a 1-0 lead off LD ace Blair Lewis in the top of the second inning after Hunter Brindle led off with a double off the leftfielder's glove. He moved up on an error, then hustled in to score when Manning Brookens sent a high pop foul down the leftfield line that was snagged by shortstop Cole Backenstose. Brindle was able to beat the long throw home.

Chambersburg pitcher Tristan Daywalt held Lower Dauphin (15-5) in check through the first two innings, but LD tied the game in the third. With two outs and Timmy Townsend on first, Tyler Friedrich and Lewis hit back-to-back singles to score the run.

In the fourth, LD hit some shots off Daywalt. Daniel Davis led off with a double that bounced over the fence and was originally – and incorrectly – called a home run. Backenstose followed with another double that didn't score Davis because Davis had to wait to see if it would be caught.

No matter. Tyler Roman hit a liner that hit off the top of Brindle's outstretched glove at first base and scored both runners for a 3-1 margin.

After Townsend drew a one-out walk, the game was halted by the umpires just before the storm hit.
