BASEBALL: Wednesday's roundup, Shippensburg clinches No. 1 district ranking

SHIPPENSBURG >> Shippensburg got a fine three-hitter from pitcher Teagan Staver and finished the regular season with a non-league baseball victory over Northeastern on Wednesday afternoon.

Staver raised his record to 7-0 by limiting the Bobcats (11-9) to a single run in the top of the seventh inning. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.

"Teagan did a great job, the defense backed him up and the offense did enough to win the game," Greyhound coach Nate Rosenberry said.

The Hounds got a run in the first inning when Cordell Shannon singled in Daulton Brenize, who had a base hit and stolen base to get in position.

In the fifth, Damon Watkins got a base hit and Zane Hershey bunted him to second. On an infield single by Cole Friese, the ball was throw away and Watkins scored. Brenize then plated Friese with a ground ball.

Shippensburg (16-4) will be the No. 1 seed in Class AAA when the District 3 Tournament begins Monday. The Hounds will host a game against the No. 16 seed – brackets will be released Thursday.

Rosenberry said, "It was good to build momentum with a quality win. We played well, and I hope we can continue to do that in the playoffs."

MCCONNELLSBURG 10-11, HYNDMAN 0-1 >> McConnellsburg closed out its regular season with a pair of comfortable non-league victories over Hyndman, taking the opener 10-0 and the second game 11-1, both in five innings.

The Spartans (16-4) will likely be the No. 3 seed in the District 5 Class A playoffs, and should host a home game next Wednesday.

"Hyndman had to win both games to get into districts, so once we won the first one, it wasn't as intense," McConnellsburg coach Brian Ramsey said. "Those were two of the most complete games we've played, for the pitching, fielding and hitting."

In the opener, Taylor Souders fired a two-hitter, walking none and striking out three. Landon Richards was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while JT Barnard was 2-for-2 and scored three runs.

Chase Novak pitched the first three innings of the second game to earn the win, with Garrison Crouse finishing up. Ryan Koontz had a big game, going 3-for-4 and driving in four runs. Taylor Souders was 2-for-2 and scored three runs, while Novak was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
