BASEBALL: Saturday's roundup, Mercersburg clinches share of MAPL title

MERCERSBURG 5-5, LAWRENCEVILLE 4-8 >> Mercersburg Academy's baseball team clinched its position as co-champs in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League with a split against Lawrencevill on Saturday.

The Blue Storm (17-3, 7-3 MAPL) split the division with Hun and have been champs or co-champs for five consecutive years.

"Given our expectations going into the season, this is a great accomplishment," said Mercersburg coach Karl Reisner, who predicted his Storm to finish around .500 in the division at the beginning of the season.

Mercersburg rode a strong all-around performance by freshman Beau Lowery in Game 1, but some costly miscues in Game 2 cost the Blue Storm a chance at the outright title.

In the opener, Lowery improved to 7-2 on the mound and also contributed at the plate. He gave up four runs – none earned – on five hits in a complete-game effort. He also had 11 strikeouts and had two hits with an RBI.

In the finale, Mercersburg scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game at three, but it committed three errors in the top of the fourth inning that led to five runs for the Big Red. Tristan Baker finished with two hits, scored twice and also drove in two for the Storm.

Reisner said, "Outside of the one inning, we played a good game. Beau had great command of the game in the opener, but losing that second game was a bit frustrating."
